It's raining sewing stuff

Hi all, I posted a while back about getting a Singer 210K and asking about it. Well this week, it arrived in my house while I was out. I was out because my DGM of 92 yrs passed away on Monday and I was at her house cleaning out and getting it ready to close up until we decide what to do with it. Well to make a long story short I now have inherited a Kenmore from the early 90"s and a White Serger with a gazillion feet all NIB from the same era. We also found two sewing machine cabinents that are in excellent shape(never used) one has a lift mechanism to raise and lower your machine. My DGM was a pack rat and a purchaser of any new gadget known to man but primarily in the cooking dept. We found

3 different kinds of Ice cream makers, choppers, blenders you name it. Now to get my DS interested in quilting and set her up with some machines. I have no idea where we will put all this stuff. My Dad said that seeing as I am in charge of looking after the house I now have my own personal sewing studio for a while. Only problem is I don't have any time to sew now. Donna inNWONtario

Donna, I'm sorry that your DGM is gone, but it sounds as though she left you a legacy of sorts. It just seems right that her sewing machines are now at home with you!

I know how you feel - mixed emotions. When my mother passed away about two years ago, I got so much sewing stuff it wasn't even funny. I still have not had to buy machine needles, cutter blades, or thread. I have six of everything, it seems - seam rippers, scissors, rulers, you name it. She was a "stocker-upper"; I just recently had to buy zip- lock bags for the first time since she died. We're still set on light bulbs and batteries.

Thanks, Louise, My DGM's passing for our family is not really too sad. She lived a very long and extremely healthy life in her own home except for the last 12 hours of her life. She had a life that many of us would be grateful for. She lived life on her own terms and died on her own terms.Gram was not a quilter or a sewer but she left us with a ton of her exquisite craftsmanship. She was a crocheter of extrodanary talent. There are tablecloths and doilies galore. I plan on taking the half finished ones and incorporate them into quilts for her beloved great great grandchildren, whom she was extremly proud of. Grandmother's fan somehow seems appropriate.Cleaning her house has been a celbration of her life for us. We have had a very good time in a wierd way laughing and enjoying going through her stuff , remembering her Donna inNwontario

That is so cool! First, she sounds like a terrific gal, and more power to her for living life on her own terms. It's great that this is a celebration of her life. Please be sure to show us the quilts you make from her crochet work. That'll be a wonderful way for her great-great-grands to remember her.

I wondered about that -- or might she have meant Dear Sis?

Thanks all for the condolances, Like I said before, this is not a sad time for us. I must admit though that not having a funeral or memorial until later on in the spring is a bit weird. My mom (DGM;s daughter) wants to have a memorial from her home in the spring so that DGM;s sister and a few remaining cousins can come. They are too old to travel so we thought that this would be better if we bring DGM to them.My dad will be crafting an urn for her, like he did for her SO whom we all called grampa( much to his delight). He was a bachelor until he and gram moved in together about 30 yrs ago. Today we spent the afternoon looking at the old family photos that we finally found stashed away in a little cranny in the attic. My mom and dad are leaving tommorrow to go back home and that will leave me and DD, DH to start sorting and cleaning the place. Mom and Dad are taking her dog home with them but I need to find a home for a cat as we are allergic to her....Oh the DS I was referring to was my sister as she is just starting to quilt (I think I was her influence). I'm going to clean and oil the machines and get them set up so they can be ready for her when they find their new home. Until then I will get to play. Oh and I found the most beautiful piece of silk from the "50's or early sixties. About 8 yards of it. Thanks again all DonnainNWONtario
