My Ladies Quilt

Kay, what about black borders first, then spacing them (after squaring them off) with an applique done in black on white in between the blocks? perhaps instead of vines and flowers, you could do a number of "lace" or rococo designs. then on the outer borders, carry the black there. that way the whole effect would be almost floating. amy

OOooh, wouldn't that be elegant . . . . and the black on the very outside could be a tone-on-tone.

I think it will eventually be beautiful! I only have one chance though -- there is no place to find more ladies!

I keep uploading more quilt possibilities. There probably weren't two pages at first. I'm leaning towards Quilt #12. At least I was until Amy mentioned appliqué inbetween the ladies. And I MUST learn how to put appliqué on a quilt in EQ. Right now the last border is "nekkid", even though appliqué is a thought, because I don't know yet how to make EQ do that!

you may be right! texture would be more elegant than more embelishments. and right again, cream and black, not white. i like the red next to the ladies, then the black then the cream. ooooooo, i want to do a B&W quilt now....now the wheels are turning....i need chocolate.... amy

Ya got me laughin'! Isn't it great the way we can all inspire each other!?! I need to get up from the computer, grab some chocolate, and work on my Bento Boxes to finish by 5:00 PM.

Hi Kaye, I think that an appliqued outside border would definitely 'do the trick' to complete the classic lines of the ladies. The framing fabric is the one behind the 'goblet lady' - have you tried it out with the other five? It is very subtle in adding a hint of colour and doesn't read solid from a distance like the others (not the gold burst one obviously). Do you have enough of #4 to lay out all the ladies with some of the fabric showing between them - to post a photo? jennellh

Kay, setting appliqué is much like setting a block, but you do it on a different layer. And it may be a "Shift-drag" to create the "box" that the appliqué sets in.

I think those ladies are gorgeous, but wonder about using all the different print borders. Personally, I would use only one fabric with "color" in it to frame all the ladies. Then repeat those colors in the appliqué borders. Appliqué sashing is an interesting idea, but might overpower the "ladies"????

Fun thread and lots of ideas. You might also want to scan/photocopy your ladies. They would be fairly easy to do as applique themselves. Then you could have more to play with.

I like the monochromatic idea, too! I think it would look much more classic than a multicolored version -- and that would fit with the look of the ladies. Though I must admit that I like that red background on the last of the ladies. ;)

That ruffle of red could be used in QOV blocks! For a quilt challenge for next May's quilt show, we have to make a quilt with stars and that "reads" red. Here come the ruffles!!

With The Ladies, I think I will stick predominantly with black and white, maybe just a hint of the colors in the fabric behind Lady #4. I think I'll use that fabric as a narrow border around each lady. I'll sleep on all these great ideas . . . . .

Hi Pat,

This piece of fabric is a real mystery. Where did these ladies come from? Whose art are they? Ya know, I keep bouncing back and forth between Asian and Art Deco. I'd love to know more about the ladies! I also thought of the Gibson Girls of the 20's.

Hi Pati,

I'm settling on the one fabric that I chose first -- the fabric behind Lady #4. I'll go get some more tomorrow. I also need to research some appliqué. I've been doing Pat Sloan's raw edge, fuse, and blanket stitch method. That won't look right on this project! I have the Piece O' Cake DVD. I think it's about needleturn. Sounds like I have my new learning task for quilting picked out for the weekend! Appliqué within EQ also.

Thank you!

The Goblet Lady!! I have very little of that fabric, but I'll go get more tomorrow. It's in the shop where my UFO group meets on Sundays. It's actually the first fabric that I picked out. Must also get some of the required black fabric that will be part of our quilt challenge for the May quilt show. Oooh, wonder if I could turn these ladies into my challenge quilt. . . . .

Yes, like we have to do with ourselves. I'm about to turn 60. All the other "0" ages didn't seem like much of anything, but this one is reminding me of what IS, not what used to be.

Is there a picture of your black-cream-gold quilt somewhere?

I was hoping this quilt of The Ladies would be fast. Something I could finish in the next two weeks. But I think they deserve more attention than that. One skinny border of the #4 fabric, some appliqué in the borders, and mostly black-and-white. And it might not be truly finished until next Spring. (I have time off September, January, and May.)

Thanks!

I'll get a copy sent to you Kay. I couldn't find it this morning!! My head is as scrambled as my computer files at the moment. Sorry.

WOW!! What a lot of great ideas! Someone emailed me offline with information about Marie Webster's appliqués. Those tulips would be perfect!! There is a Marie Webster book on hold for me at the public library.

Now I've got a totally different notion of how this quilt should come about. The Art Nouveau-Art Deco approach makes so much more sense! It won't be the quick thing I thought I would finish before I go back to school on October

  1. That's OK because the revised version is going to be beautiful! I'll play some more in EQ this weekend. (And I'll learn how to put appliqué in the borders.)

Thank you sooooo much!!

Try to find some textured white or cream silk, one of the heavier weaves, not the thin flimsy stuff. Bet that would look great in your sashing, especially with a slightly wider center strip of white. Roberta in D

Ooooh, Roberta, that's even better than plain cream!

I've just been out buying more of the #4 fabric. It was already on sale and I got another 25% off in honor of the quilt show!

I also stopped by the library to look at old appliqué books.

I'm pleased as punch that I found a way to save this entire thread in my newsreader application!!
