need fast award ribbon idea

I volunteered to take care of the Celebrity Judges portion of our early August quilt show. We send letters to anyone in town we could remotely consider a celebrity (mayor, council, police chief, community-minded store owners, athletes, artists, etc). They come to the show and choose their favorite quilt. The only award is a ribbon.

Silly me ... I thought all I'd have to do was send letters, but I'll have to come up with prize ribbons for each judge (who might or might not show up) to place on their fav. (There was a box full left from last year, but no one can find it.)

I'm working 20-48 hours a week and also just took on a June to early August committment that will occupy several hours every evening and weekend.

So ... I'm looking for something quick and cute. It can be anything, but does have to have 2 ribbons hanging below ... one on which to write "celebrity judge favorite" and the other one on which to write the judge's name.

I'd appreciate any ideas. Thanks! (I wrote TIA ... thanks in advance ... on an email once and someone thought Tia was my name! ... actually it is cuter than my real name.) Lobo

Also...do you know anyone that could embroider ?....unless you wouldn't need that info....I'm sure you would have diff colors for diff awards anyway... Mary again.

Key word is FAST. Even a simple block is more than I want to do. I'll need

25-30 ribbons. They can all be different as they award is not different ... all the same. I thought about pinking a flower shape and gathering it up with a button in the middle ... something quick like that, but that doesn't look too tacky. Maybe not possible (avoiding the tacky ... quick look).

and MB ... very funny (said with a distinctly sarcastic, but appreciative of the humor, tone ; )

could you print some blocks onto transfer paper and then attach the ribbons? Similar look but faster....

some really big YoYos with ribbons behind? Do you have a craft store nearby? It is the end of the school year, there might be a sale on fancy ribbon stuff used for prom/homecoming corsage monstrosities the girls wear here in TX.... and no i can't find a pic right now...

Now you're on the right track. ... a yo-yo reversed with the open side to the back, and a button in the front middle. That would be cute and quick. I have tons of buttons.

We have Hobby Lobby, Michael's and 2 LQSes.

Keep those ideas coming! You guys rock. Lobo

Or put the gathered opening of the yo-yo to the front and put the button in the middle, over the opening, like I did on this jacket: . Of course, you'd make bigger yo-yos and use bigger buttons. You could use assorted fabric scraps and any odd buttons you might have. You could sew the button and attach the ribbons in one step. Or instead of stitching the button and ribbons, glue them. I'm not sure, though, that gluing would be any quicker than stitching.

At our last show, we also had a "Doug's choice". Doug is the janitor at the church where we meet; he has always been very helpful, so we gave him a ribbon to award. We were really pleased when he also won our raffle quilt -- with one of the 2 or 3 tickets he had purchased. There was someone else at the show who had bought a lot of tickets, thinking he'd be assured of winning the quilt; he offered Doug quite a bit of money for the quilt, but Doug refused to sell :)

I'll have to glue a paper to write the year, place, etc. on onto the back. I'll print them and glue gun it on. I thought a yo-yo might "fluff up" more if the opening was to the back.

Love the Doug Choice idea! Lobo ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Delete the obvious to reply to me personally. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I agree! I did the same thing on a quilt I made: (scroll down for a better view of the yoyos), and it worked very well.

Being one to avoid much hand sewing , I'd find a way to sew those four small stitches by machine ! Then it would be ultra fast ! Mary

There is one in my studio that would probably work. I got it at some guild event IIRC, but cannot remember the reason! So, it has two yo-yos stacked; maybe 1" across yo-yo centered on 3" yo-yo. It looks good, and would look just as good with button instead, as you suggest. The ribbon tails are 3/4" wide grosgrain ribbon. The whole award is about 7" long. No writing. You would need to find a smooth ribbon that would allow writing, perhaps with a gold pen. You can do all the "Judge's Choice" portion ahead of time, then add the judge's name as he/she arrives to the event. BTW: most shows use term Judge's Choice.

HTH!

I have a few ribbons from State (VA) and from Regional (CA) fairs. They come with a little cardstock piece either stapled onto the back or attached with a grommet. Staples can hide behind a yo-yo, a flower, or even a pretty bow. The card could be plain, or you could run copies in the computer to provide space for info. -- Pat

Now we're getting there ... I tried one yo-yo alone and it's sorta boring even when gathered up like a flower.

The sequence of writing you suggest is exactly what was done last year. No point in putting the names on ahead of time, as not all the "celebrities" showed up. I don't think the writing was tested on the ribbon ahead of time as most of those I saw bled.

I'm the chair of my guild's quilt show this year -- the first ever. Can you provide me a copy of the letter you used to campaign for judges?
