Needles for heavier weight cotton threads

Some weeks ago I started a topic here about Sulky's 12 wt. cotton thread- which I like very much. I mentioned I was using a size 18 sewing machine needle with that heavy thread in buttonhole stitching around fused applique. A few here mentioned whether that size 18 needle was a bit of overkill- and I agreed- but it was all I had unless I went down to a size 14, so I used the 18.

I just started sewing with a newly purchased 30 wt. Sulky cotton thread- buttonhole stitching again- and noticed on the spool's label that it suggests using a 90/100 (size 16) Top Stitch needle. I'd think the size 18 for the 12 wt. thread might be right on after all. :-)

I do love those heavier Sulky threads for this purpose! It really looks nice.... the 12 wt. makes a stitch that looks like a very narrow braid has been applied to the edges of the applique. If you've forgotten here's a pic of the stitching on the leaf in variegated green 12 wt. thread (the flower has the very same stitch in a 50 wt. Sulky cotton thread and looks entirely different)-

Oh Leslie,

I love your topstitching, it really add dimension and textures. Very nice work.

As for the needle size. I think you had it right the first time. Using the heavy thread you were using you needed a very heavy needle to punch a hole threw the fabric. I love thread embellishments but if you use a needle too small you thread will shear off and cause a lot of problems.

Interesting comparison. Thanks Leslie. The 12 looks so good. I've never tried anything thicker than a 40!! I am such a coward. Why do I never feel the urge to experiment? Am I missing a gene somewhere? . In message , Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. writes

Um ... aren't you the same person who wrote that wonderful book on mathematical/geometrical quilts?!! ;)

I would say *that* is very brave - and VERY experimental in nature!! :)

Math and Geometry scare the you-know-what outta me ... so in *my* eyes you're the MOST adventurous EVER!! :)

Enable, encourage, inspire . . . all nice words but sometimes here, we've just got to take you cautious folks to the edge of the water and shove. We will never give up. Well, maybe not. No time soon anyway. Polly

Nice job Leslie! I wish I could get my machine to work nicely with heavier threads. They always skip stitches on me. Maybe I should try a larger needle or get some sulky to try out instead of YLI. What kind of machine do you use? Mine is a Bernina 153... Elly

It's a Janome 6600 which I absolutely LOVE! I have yet to find anything I've done that requires adjusting the tensions.... and that's just fine with me. I know how- just do not like messing with it.

Sulky has a FAQ on their website about using this thread. Of course everyone's machine sews a little differently than others, so in the end you have to use what works best for you :-). Still, it is a starting place.
