Sulky 12 wt. thread & Presencia thread

I accidentally bought a gorgeous variegated green Sulky cotton thread in a

12 weight- I usually buy 40 or 50 wt. I had to use a size 18 needle to accommodate it, but the effect is really cool! The buttonhole stitch around the applique looks as tho it is a very narrow braid applied to the edge. You can compare it to the appearance of the cotton 50 wt. turquoise thread on the flower- which is the same stitch. I'm buttonhole stitching the appliques on my mom Chemo Cuddle Quilt.

Here's a photo of the quilt top (I was looking for pieced morning glories and didn't find that pattern, so I designed my own appliqued morning glories) plus two close-ups of the threads-

Now the Presencia thread- I was VERY disappointed in it. It comes with some kind of plastic wrap around the spool that's very difficult to remove. But when you get the plastic wrap removed there is an adhesive backed dot on the end of the thread. When you finally get the dot peeled off there is a round spot of adhesive residue left on the thread. I had a choice of running the sticky adhesive thru my sewing machine- and the delicate tension disks- or wasting half of the thread on the spool by unwinding the thread to where there was no adhesive left on it.

And... while I was sewing with it my sm made some ugly noises so I stopped to see what had happened. The darn thread had a knot in it! Yep, two ends of thread were tied together- they must have run out of thread half-way thru filling the spool so someone just tied the two ends together and then kept right on filling the spool. Grrrrr! I am not happy about this! I would NOT recommend Presencia thread!

I LOVE that 12 wt sulky. I use it to machine appliqué all the time. It's also great for redwork and other types of embroidery.

I've not tried the Presencia on a spool, but I like their 6 ply embroidery floss in the skeins. Has a silky feel to it.

Great quilt, Leslie. I don't get that edge effect with the Sulky. Mine just looks like slightly heavy buttonhole. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Beautiful quilt, Leslie, great pattern design. Wonderful . . . and I'll see if I can pick up a spool of 12 wt sulky. Sometimes I want a heavy sort of primitive look with black thread on 30's repro. That ought to be a lot easier than stacking two spools of thread. A whole lot. That size 18 needle is a killer though. I wonder if there's not one with a wider eye or is the heft of the needle needed for the thread weight? Polly

Polly, I had needles in 9, 11, 12 and 14- metallica, quilting, embroidery, topstitching, and microtex. NONE of those 14s could handle the 12 wt. thread. No matter how slowly I went it shredded every inch or so. I was getting very upset until I stumbled across that 18 needle. Heaven only knows when I bought it- it is a Singer brand needle and I quit using them and have used Schmetz exclusively for about 16-17 years. I'm sure glad I had it, tho! A 16 *might* work... but I don't have any 16s so I'm glad the

18 is doing the job. I'm sewing thru two layers of tightly woven batiks plus Heat & Bond Lite to fuse them together.... maybe that's part of the reason the 18 is what worked for me? I still have to sew fairly slow with the 18 or the thread will start shredding.

I think the 12 wt. in black would be super with those repro fabrics! Great idea!

Cindy-

I am using a 1.5 width and a 2.0 length. Don't know if that translates to your machine or not. The stitch is #39 on my Janome 6600- it's the buttonhole stitch that goes back and forth twice then jumps to the left. HTH I really like the look of it!

Leslie - that quilt is beautiful. I'd love to be able to machine applique like that but I do love hand applique too. Maybe if I practiced more, I'd get really good at it, but the days seem to go so fast and I never seem to get around to it.

Polly, use an embroidery needle. Bigger eye.

That's weird because I use a Schmetz 14 needle and it works just fine. What can possibly be the difference?

I think mine goes 2 stitches forward and then jumps left.

I just took some close-ups of a top I finished awhile back and I machine appliquéd (and pieced) the top. I didn't get bored with it or anything. I usually quilt half way through and call it good.

It's in the quilts folder and if you click on the last 3 pictures, you can see it good.

Really lovely Leslie. Your stitching is so accurate, it's amazing. Interesting that using such a (relatively!) thick thread can still make such a neat edge. I love the way you have made the flower 'features' in thread. Beautifully done. Your mother's going to love it, no question. . In message , Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. writes

I think the reason your buttonhole stitches look like real ones and mine look like braid is that mine are a shorter stitch length and width and the two stitches back and forth. You might check your machine to see if you have more than one buttonhole stitch. Mine has three including one like yours.

One more question- I peeked at your sewing room- COOL!!! It's a great setup and space. But what is in all the intriguing bottles above your sewing machine?

BTW-- I LOVE your quilts! I really liked the unusual color combinations on your guild challenge. The colors work so well together and are very striking but not what most people would put together. By reaching out and trying something different you got a really unexpected and lovely combination. Good on you!

I wish I hade known about the 12w when I did my sister's clown for Christmas. The thread just doesn't show up very well. Your Mom's quilt is lovely, and thanks for the tip.

Leslie that looks good. I am surprised about the Presencia thread. Not my experience with it at all. I agree the wrapper is a bit of a pain, but it slides right off the end of the spool, at least all of mine have. And I didn't have the adhesive problem either. Nor any knots in the 4 spools I have almost used up with hand piecing. Sorry you did have a problem. you might want to contact whoever you bought it from and let them know what you are unhappy about, or Presencia itself. If you don't let the people who deal with it know about your unhappiness they can't fix any problems....

I haven't tried any of the 12 weight threads yet, but may do so soon. Just need to find a project for them.

I also have not had the same experience with Prescencia thread that Leslie has. Leslie, I wonder if whoever you bought it from knew it was flawed when they bought it? I've purchased Prescencia on line & at the LQS's & never have run across the adhesive sticker. That seems so strange. (Maybe it's a knock-off, like they do with the designer purses:)) I like the Prescencia as well as I like Aurifil thread.

I'm amazed that I have the only spools with the adhesive dot! I bought a package of about 10-12 spools and have opened most of them and every one has that darn adhesive dot on the beginning end of the thread. Maybe it was a close out of the ones with the problem??? I don't remember where I bought it, but since there are so many other fine threads available, I won't chance it again by buying Presencia.

Leslie, that quilt is just beautiful! I love the morning glories you designed, and the batik between the rows is absolutely perfect! You're right -- that heavier thread really does look like a very narrow braid. :)
