Thread > save yourselves

I love 50 wt thread. I've posted about it, I've raved about it. I bought it for hand piecing and soon progressed to machine piecing. I've used it for appliqué,when the color I have is right. That weight thread, along with Mary Ellen's Best Press, has made me a Pretty Good Piecer.

I've spent the money and bought Aurifil and Presencia in many different colors but would never go any deeper than that. I don't _need_ every single color or collection.

So I was pretty jazzed when I read on their website that Connecting Threads thread was 50 weight! All those beautiful colors in big spools at such a great price.

I bought every collection. The box came yesterday and they all looked so beautiful I almost cried. The colors are gorgeous.

Then I unwrapped a spool. Hopes dashed!

There is no way this is 50 weight. None. I even handed my husband two lengths of thread and his reading glasses and said is there a difference in the thickness between these two threads. He held up the Aurifil and said this is like a hair and this is like a rope, holding up the CT thread.

It's heavier than Coat & Clarks all purpose thread. I could crochet with this thread.

Why would they do this to me?

I don't want a refund. I want these beautiful spools of thread to be 50 weight. They promised.

All 50 wt thread is not the same. The 50 wt. refers to the weight of a single ply of the thread; it means that 50 km. of the thread weights 1 kg. The Connecting Threads thread is a 50/3 thread, which means that it is 3 strands of 50 wt. twisted together. I'm not sure what Aurifil is -- probably 50/2, which would account for it being a finer thread. There is lots of information about thread at the Superior Threads web site .

As Sandy/Ragmop said, if you don't like the thread, return it

(By the way, I happen to like the thread from Connecting Threads. It is a decent thread at a very affordable price. It's not Aurifil, but I like it better than the Coats & Clark that I had been using. And I think the perfect thread for hand appliqué is silk -- no need for multiple colors, as it just seems to melt into the fabric. I've just appliquéd the "Adoration" wall hanging -- a nativity scene -- with one color thread -- taupe.)

i'm no expert but my first thot was how many ply each one has? that would make a difference for sure. so off i went to check both websites. seems the aurifil for quilting, the first one on that page, is 50/2. the connecting threads is 50/3. something is out of kilter there if they are so obviously different, but what do i know about it. zilch really. i hope you can return all you bought. fingers crossed it all works out ok for you. such a bummer. :( j.

Yeah, it's 3 ply. I didn't notice, all I saw was 50 wt. The colors are so pretty.

Stupid plies.

That was what I thought too, though I don't think the ply quite accounts for how thick this particular thread sounds to me, my understanding was that weights were fairly inaccurate anyway, I find Aurifil to be the same thickness as threads such as The Bottom Line which say they are 60wt.

Because not all 50wt (or any weight thread) is the same. Thread is measured in a strange way; it's measured by the ply not the finished thread. I know, it's more confusing than shoe sizes, but that's the way it is.

They gave you 50 wt thread that is 3 ply. It's also regular staple cotton and not the nice long staple cotton that you get in your nice Aurifil and Presencia so what you got is going to be much lintier to boot. The nice threads you have been buying are 50 wt but 2 ply which is why they are thinner than what you just received.

Thread is a really, really good example of you get what you pay for.

My personal favorite is Masterpiece. I buy 3,000 yard cones from Sew Thankful. They last me a really, really long time! But, I'm certainly happy to piece with Aurifil or Presencia if that's what is handy.

Return what you got and use the money to buy nice thread in just the colors you need.

Why exactly do you need a whole rainbow of spools?

I have three colors to piece - white, tan and black for fabrics that are light, medium and dark.

Applique does take many, but have you seen these?

Wow! I learned I have been knotting the incorrect end of my thread for over 20 years! As a left hander I just followed what everyone else did!

Machine appliqué may take a lot of colors, but hand appliqué certainly doesn't if you use silk thread. I've done hand appliqué on a whole range of colors, including black and white, using only taupe silk thread. It seems to melt into the fabric and become unnoticeable unless examined carefully and closely.

Yes, Julia, I like silk thread too, but it takes some effort to use it. Even when I knot it on the needle, it still works loose and I find that it tangles easily even if I use Thread Heaven or Sewer's Aid. It also shreds faster than cotton. I learned how to appliqué with silk thread, but I mostly use cotton now.

The colors are so gorgeous that I may not return the sets. I could use it for needle punch or even embroidery.

Yes, it's that thick.
