I bought a couple of reels of varigated King Tut today. Dead pretty, it is.
Anything I should be aware of?

Rita - 23 cones and counting :-)
OK... I'd kinda got that one! ;)
Just of KT? That's nice. :)
I got a blues and a browns (well, mostly brown, dark red, fawn, greenish, swamp, and brown! :D )
Oh, yes, I have that same urge. I think I'm only about 10 cones right now, though. Okay, maybe 12.

Well, it turned me into a real thread snob. That's the only one we use for machine quilting. Not that I had much experience to begin with, but I think it's really nice thread. Sherry
Have any of you used Aurafil? I love the stuff I have and I'm craving some of their gorgeous variegated threads. Anybody try King Tut and Aurafil and can tell about the difference?
Sunny
I have some Aurifil and love it. King Tut will have to be good to beat that. I also love YLI's cottons and their silk thread, and the new Coats Cotton, Seta Reale, and Duet ( NOT to be confused with Dual Duty, which is evil) polyester for clothing construction..
I have tried both. They both sew beautifully. So far I can say that the Aurifil variegated (the one I have anyone) has a more 'restrained' colour range than the King Tut. The spool almost 'reads as a solid turquoise', though there are stretches of cream in there. and different shades of the main colour. The Aurifil has more sheen. Please note: this is not an exhaustive survey >gHave any of you used Aurafil? I love the stuff I have and I'm craving
Not too much difference, they are both easy on my sm, but I do lean towards King Tut.
Ooh, pretty!
I've bought from Redrock: shipping to the UK isn't prohibitive.
Aurifil is a finer thread than King Tut. Both are fantastic threads, Sunny! You'll want to use KT when you want the thread to stand out more; the Aurifil will give a more subtle effect.
No, I have not tried Aurafil yet, but would like to try it.
Speaking of thread, I always buy regular handquilting thread for handquilting (mettler or gutterman is what's available here). I do this because that's what I was told to use and I always do what I'm told :-) Question is, how come you can't just use machine quilting thread to hand quilt?
Sherry
You ca. It works perfectly well. But don't use the coated hand quilting thread in your machine, unless you want to dismember you sewing machine tension mechanism and clean it all off with white spirit...
Check the label on the spool/cone. It should have a needle size and type recommendation. Bob Purcell, of Superior Threads usually recommends using a topstitching needle. Tut is a heavier thread, definitely not for piecing, but great for quilting and decorative use. You may need to slightly loosen your tension too.
The Aurifil I use most of the time is 50 wt. so is fairly fine. But Aurifil does make other sizes and types of thread. I know they have a wool thread and "bigger" threads too. The key is the color of the spool/spindle. (Orange is the 50 wt, can't remember the others off hand.)
BTW, for many thread questions there is a lot of information at the Superior Threads website.... check under the education tab. You can actually go into information overload there if you aren't careful.
Have fun, Pati, > I bought a couple of reels of varigated King Tut today. =A0Dead pretty, i= t is.
Yes, this one says Jeans/size 90 or similar... I have suitable needles. :)
Yes, that ordange spool fine thread is the one I have. Lovely stuff.
Oh, I will :) I love the thread and may just look at it a while before a suitable quilt asks for it. :)
