The first is a long way from being finished, it needs borders, then quilting, before I did this, I swore, I would never piece arcs or circles, but then I saw the fabric that is the background, bought it and started looking for what to do with it, when I saw this pattern, it fitted perfectly, so I went back on my resolution speedily! It was the first time I had foundation pieced and I found that a very satisfactory method, my son (3.75) helped me, he picked out each fabric then I placed it in the correct position and assisted him in guiding it through the sewing machine, I was really impressed as to what he could do, both the use of the sewing machine and the feel he had for the fabric.

The second is an afternoons worth of work max, as the vast majority of the quilting is done, it's for DS, the pattern was chosen by him and the fabric too, he's also helped me a tiny bit with some of the quilting, again, I'm very impressed with his patience and thankful he's light for his age! Please nag me about this one! I'd like to finish it this week.

The third I've shown a picture of before, I was so pleased when I finished the top, I'm about 2/3 of the way through quilting it, stipple quilting on the bright blocks, it's in gold thread, when you are up close, it's definitely worth it being gold rather than clear, but I'm not sure if you can see that from the photo. I'm also undecided about how to quilt the border, it's about 4inches wide and about 40inches long, so I understand that it needs something, but I don't want to take away from the pattern of the fabric, but there is also no way I can free motion quilt along the lines of the fabric! Any ideas???????

They're great, Anne! The oriental quilt still looks beautiful! (mine don't usually look as good once I've been 'at' them with the quilting!). I couldn't quite see the gold quilting, but I'm sure in enhances those fabrics. Can't give you help on your border quilting - I'm the world's worst for choosing quilting designs!

I really like your train wheels quilt, too. How wonderful that your little boy is enjoying helping. When he gets a bit older, if he is still intent on joining in with quilting, perhaps you could show him websites of some of the really excellent male quilters. And, of course, the work of our male colleagues here. He will love Eddie's big ships quilts, and Denny's postcards; then the contrast of John's work. . In message , Anne Rogers writes

Your quilts are lovely Anne. The PP is very good.I must do it more often, then I might get the knack of not wasting so much fabric! With regards to the quilting on the Oriental one. How are you with F M? Some feathers or fans in the middle of the border?, or maybe a serpant stitch( just a curved row of stitches ) a couple of times!

Wow, That's great. YOu have much more patience than I'd have to do all that piecing. Gen

Hard to give quilting advice without a look at the real thing. But you might consider extending the design structure (those diagonal lines) into the border and stippling just as you did on the interior. Maybe use black thread. Sort of an echo of the main event.

Your son's quilt is so cheerful, great work! I really love the wheels. Such a great way to use scraps! Roberta in D, Queen of the Scrap Heap

How wonderful that you could work on this together! And it's going to be a great quilt, too. :)

nag, nag, nag...

Anne, I love oriental fabrics, and it looks to me like that's what you've used here. Great pattern and use of fabrics! I *think* what I'm seeing in the border is a sort of clamshell print, right? If you don't want to quilt along those lines, why don't you do some concentric diamonds in the border? That would echo the sashing in the main part and contrast nicely with the curves of the clamshells.

Love the wheels quilt!! And the Thomas quilt is great--did you have a pattern for it or was it your own creation? Sorry can't help with the quilting on the Oriental one--but it is beautiful!!

Anne I can't give you any advice, but I sure do love those quilts. Can't decide which one I like the best.

thanks all for the kind responses, I think I'll try the idea of extending the "sashing" an quilting the lines, then when I see what that looks like I can decided whether or not to to any stippling in the spaces, I'll use clear thread rather than the gold I'm using on the main part.

I'm a beginner at the quilting section of things (I've done a lot of piecing!), so I need to do some more practice on scraps for actually following lines!
