OT anti-virus programs

My Norton is going to expire in a couple weeks. It has also decided to stop opening, so maybe it's time look at something else. I need some guidance from our resident computer gurus as to what programs I should put on. I don't mind purchasing something, so if that's better than free ones, that's fine. If there is something free that works well, I'd download it right away since I believe my Norton isn't doing any updates, etc. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I love the free version of AVG. It's good. My sons have had it on their computers for going on five years now (both download a ton of stuff and game heavily) and we've never had a virus succeed in disabling a computer in our house. Matter of fact, the most damage we've ever had to a computer was done by Norton Anti-virus. I bought the newest version at the time and installed it. In record time it destroyed some very important programs in my computer and crippled my connection to the router. I had to wipe and reformat the hard drive. Portions of the Norton's actually survived the reformat -- totally embedded somewhere in the bowels of the computer. Grrrrrrrrr. I think you would be well served by AVG. And the price is certainly right.

Take it from one who knows a thing or three about computers, AVG is a good choice. Some refer to the "all in one" software packages for antivirus and spyware and such "bloat ware" since they put so much stuff on your hard drive and tend to slow them down. I have tried Norton and MacAfee both and have uninstalled them (not an easy feat to do) and went to AVG. Works great and doesn't slow down my machine. Free is good - gives you more to spend on fabric!

Alice: Is the product/program actually named AVG? Where and how would I get it? We have McAfee (just one a in that name.) but it is sssssssoooooooo slow, I am sure it is responsible for my inability to get to certain sites, etc. Thanks bunches. PAT

The first one is the free version. I would also suggest running Spybot.

Another good program for Windows users which is also free is Microsoft Windows Defender. Works in the background and doesn't slow things down. Set a schedule that works for you.
