OT Arlo Guthrie

Arlo is Woody Guthrie's eldest boy. You remember Woody Guthrie? Wrote "This Land is Your Land", "Bound for Glory", "Pretty Boy Floyd", and a whole slew of other classic folk songs.

Arlo performs in the same tradition, but a bit different style. He is best know for a more "Talkin Blues" approach and comedic presentation.

Here is the song he is probably best known for, performed by him at the Guthrie Center in 2005:

Is this off of my post? He was great - a very small venue to benefit the Guthrie Center, which does a lot for a variety of people. Last night was his last appearance with his group, which includes his son who is absolutely adorable! Judy from Mass

Others might remember him as the fresh-faced kid with the guitar at Woodstock -- or Alice's Restaurant, or City of New Orleans, Didn't hear much from him after the 70's. Woody Guthrie is a favorite son of our state, so Arlo performs here often -- had a special on him on PBS. My, he has changed. (so have we all). I do love to listen though. Sort of. Polly said she had no clue about Arlo Guthrie, and I just could not imagine anybody going through life never having heard "The Alice's Restaurant Massacree"

That is sort of our Thanksgiving tradition. We always play it right before we sit down to a fine Thanksgiving dinner that can't be beat.

Here is one for the Arlo Guthrie Fans. I helped Jody Guthrie, Arlo's

1/2 Brother, disassemble and move a Piano, up a couple of flights of very narrow stairs into his new apartment. back in San Francisco, in the 1970's. There were about 4 of us guys, one case of beer, and an upright piano. We were dragooned into helping. and as I was the only one with a P.U. Truck, and enough tools to effect the disassembly and reassembly, of the piano, I was in charge of the whole thing. It turned into an Alice's Restaurant, type of experience, which may have been made into a similar song. I never found out, but Jody was a great guy and probably just as capable of turning that experience into a song. Ah yes, San Francisco in it's heyday.
