OT Brush Fires in FL

Ok, these are getting a little close to home for my comfort. Probably within

10 miles or so. Fortunately, we are a relatively sparely populated county, but still, smelling smoke and knowing the source is close in a bit unnerving. Though, maybe a good sign is that the shelter that was opened at the middle school is mere blocks from my house. It's sad that the badly needed rain we got a taste of over the weekend maybe be the cause of the fires, from lightning strikes. Life in the Lightning Capitol of the World...

Best wishes to you and your community. I will do my rain dance. We are so dry here too. My grass is brown and we can't water because of the water restrictions. The good news is everyone's grass is brown and we aren't in the fire zone - yet.

Hi Debbie, I am in Eustis and we no longer smell the smoke from the fires close to Deland, about 30 minutes away. Sat we had 15 minutes of rain---not near as much as we need. What town/city are you close to? Barbara in Central FL

We smell the smoke really strong today. I'm in Brooksville. Keep a good watch and good luck.

I'm crossing my fingers, Debi! I hope the fires die out quickly and don't get any nearer to you!

There are fires in Manatee county on the west coast. I cannot even go outside because of the smoke. There are a lot of fires going in Florida right now because of the drought. I hope it rains soon. I have a quilting friend in Kansas that has her basement flooded yesterday and that was where she sewed. Weather has been very extreme so far this year. I hope this is not a bellwether for what is to come this summer.

I'm in Starke, just north of the fire area. Two of the fires have merged into a 16,000 acre fire. The winds are still out of the northwest so it is moving it away from us. It's actually smokier in Gainesville where I work than it is here and Gainesville is 30 miles from here. We keep hoping the low pressure system off the coast will move in and help drown the fires but it's moving awfully slowly.
