More fires..... this time in Arizona...

There have been several brush fires going here in Arizona too. One is in the riverbed on the southwest side of Phoenix. Lots of smoke and a lot of acreage burned. It was set by lightening. There were some evacuations in the southwest part of the valley..... I don't think in Phoenix proper, but Goodyear/Avondale and such. Air quality has been terrible here on the west side of town and into downtown Phoenix.

Then there is one raging up in the rugged terrain by Crown King. The entire town and surrounding area has been evacuated since Sunday, and at least 3 houses and 4 sheds have burned. This is a rough fire to fight because of the terrain and the difficulty of getting in to where it is safely. They have been using air tankers and helicopters dropping retardant and water to try and save homes and get a handle on it. After several days of burning this fire is only about 10-15% contained.

We've been getting some pretty strong winds, and dry thunderstorms which is always a danger for fires. Late yesterday/last night parts of the Valley finally got some rain.

Let's hope that the weather cooperates and they can get these two major fires under control/out before more are started.

Pati, in miserably hot, smoky, Phoenix

We had a bout of lightening, then streak lightening (DD got some GREAT streak lightening pixs), and when it got closer, we came inside. (We were watching from just inside the alcove) Got hit with a bit of high winds followed by a downpour. We watched it bounce up form the driveways.

Butterfly (And it was a free show ; )

We're in for another bout. 2nd night in a row. Last nights didn't last very long.

May not go out to see the fireworks (we sty in town and park in a Church Parking Lot.don't have to smell the smoke --have a great vantage point as we've only been joined for a very short time by other cars.

Saw that you all out in the far northeast Valley got hammered again last night. We got some wind but that's about it.

Fireworks in Goodyear were canceled at 8PM, because of wind and lightening. The big show at the Tempe town lake went on and I watched on TV. (That one shoots the fireworks from the bridge so they are over water. ) Channel 5 was doing weather updates frequently, and during the 10PM news said there had been over 3,000 lightening strikes during the afternoon/evening in the metro area. That is a lot of lightening, even when most of it doesn't hit anything.

The Crown King fire is about 10% contained. And they found another house burned, structure total is at 11 gone. There is a meeting planned for Sunday to see if/when residents might be able to return home.

Not a lot on the news about the fire down in the river bed (the "Ethan" fire) so it may be well under control, finally.

Hope the fires in California can be contained and there is no more loss of life/homes there.

Fortunately, we were all off the compies. We watched the fireworks on TV--until the lightening put all the lights out for a bit. They came back on within 10 min so we didn't get the generator out.

Butterfly (DD got a coupla really neat lightening pixs and 2 GORGEOUS ones of clouds)
