anyone near CA fires?

Ginger mentioned in a footnote that she was 40 miles from the fires. Is anyone else of our group near Acton?

We talked with my brother-in-law today and they are packed if they have to leave. They keep their brush will trimmed away from the house and have a water tank and plenty of fire hose on the property so should be able to protect themselves from small sparks. They long ago accepted fires and earthquakes as the price they pay for living in Southern California. We forgot to ask if he is planning to go to work tomorrow. He said he couldn't leave the area today because he didn't think they would let him back in. The exit near his house is closed.

I am just in the smoke here in the high desert east of there. No fire danger (knock wood) but the smoke is really shutting everyone down. Once you evacuate you might not get back for weeks. That is why a lot of folks hesitate to leave. It is hot and dry but the winds are not bad. That is the only good news. It is suppose to cool off in the next week but that is little help now. Taria

DS#2 is fairly close, but not evacuated as yet. More gray hairs for me. I do wish he'd live somewhere that didn't have fires and earthquakes. joan

I am in the smoke area, but am not physically in danger from the fires themselves. I am hacking up some nasty stuff from what is coming in on the air. No, no A/C here at home. And the schedule shows me to be out of the courthouse going to our psychiatric locked facilities for court hearings this week, so I will be on the road aropund this area.

One of the things they are very concerned about is the Observatory in the path of the fire, and Mount Wilson, where almost all the broadcast/ internet/cell phone companies have transmitters and relay stations. The fire is not too far away from there.

Yep, in California you prepare for fires and earthquakes.

I was up by the La Canada/Flintridge fire on Saturday. When I got home, I found that the neighborhood where I owned my first house had been evacuated. Scary stuff. So far, South Orange County is fine, just HOT!

The smoke here in Pahrump was horrible yesterday. Not only was the sky a hazy brown, we could actually smell the smoke. In other fires, we've had the hazy skies, but I rarely remember smelling the smoke. Just gave us a taste of what the poor people there actually have to contend with. Hope the firemen can get it under control soon, but it is an uphill battle. Also saw a headline that two firemen had lost their lives. :-(

That is just awful news about the fires- we see it on TV. Such a similiarity to an Australian summer with wild fire threats. Wishing everyone and their property safe.

We set off for our US trip next week and begin our RV trip on the

14th. Our first stop after a few days in LA is El Portal near Yosemite, and I see that area is under threat. Scarey stuff. Pray for rain.

Cheers Bronnie (busy packing)

I'm hoping everyone is safe and sound at this point. Yes, Taria, we do have the smoke -- it started hitting here yesterday, but I'm just grateful that we're not in the fire area. Best of luck to all who are.

good luck to your family in the fire areas. i live up north and we had one a few weeks ago. we lost our power for

3 days and i lost all my freezer food. we live in the forest so know what these fires can do. so far we have been lucky and the last 5 fires have only come up to the deck and surrounded the house and burned up the brush and up the trunks of the trees. we were evcuated all the fires except this last one. hope all is ok with everyone near any of the fires. karen(kz) northern Ca

I was thinking the same thing about the hurricane Taria.

Yesterday morning the smoke had cleared out, but by afternoon, the wind had changed back to the southwest, and our sky just got black. Looked cloudy, but it was all smoke. Very eerie. Saw that orange moon too.

Best regards, Michelle > We just got back from a day trip to SD. We could see the smoke from that

if those cell towers go down its going to be a mess of crap to deal with. no cell phone access, omg, the whole of southern california will probably come to a stand still. that should be interesting anyhow. would be awful to lose the observatory up there tho, for more than just southern california residents. keep safe and well, Ginger. j.

i have been keeping track of the fires as i'll be in California tomorrow. i won't be near them, i dont think, landing in Long Beach, so i guess that's more southwest of the fires. hope it does cool down and rain for them tho. amy in CNY

Well, the weather looks to be cooling down and that is a really good thing. How much smoke probably depends on how the wind blows but you should be ok. Not so much smokey here but air quality is so bad I can't see the mountains at all today. Cal Fire has done a heck of a job working this and the other fires lately. The weather in So Cal is typically pretty hot and miserable until the first week of Oct. My sister and daughter share the 4th as their birthday and mom always said that was the worst of the heat and then it broke. I have found that to be still true. I hope you have a great trip/visit. Scoot on down to M&L if you can. : ) Taria

M&L? not sure what that is.

Yeah, my son's wedding is the 12th, in San Pedro. Cant wait to get on the plane tomorrow AM, and get there. i hope the fires are out soon. the rest of the family is flying into LAX. probly will be able to see it from the air.

Geez. i hope it cools down. today was in the 90's there wasnt it? amy in CNY
