OT - Casper, WY

I am moving to Casper, WY. Anyone live there or near there?

I currently live in Idaho Falls, ID, about 6 1/2 hours away if the weather and roads are good or 8 1/2 hours away if not. My husband is already there and he says it's great. Just wondered if anyone from the group is from there or has lived there and how they like it.

I have visited there on several occassions. My ex had family there so we went to visit from Colorado. It is a nice town, rather rustic, or was when we went. It caters a lot to tourists in the summer months - what there are of them. The rest of the time you have to make room for the elk in the road. LOL

My brother lived there for 5-6 years and was happy there. I was only in Casper for 2 days for his funeral. I remember the fences to keep the snow from blowing across the highway scared me. VBG I had the impression it was a friendly town from the people we dealt with there- waitresses, motel employees, his friends, etc. Best of luck with your move,

DH & I spent a couple of nights going and coming back from Yellowstone National Park. It seems like a nice place to live. A friend of ours lived there all his life, and he evidently liked it. He said some winters were worse than others, and sometimes he was sick of all the snow.

I lived in Casper for the 10 months I worked there on road construction. It's HOT in the summer but humidity is low except when thunder storms are moving in, *COLD* in the winter and the wind seldom stops blowing, that means blizzards are common in the winter. Take weather advisories very seriously. There is a Hancock's Fabric and a nice quilt shop that is also a Pfaff dealer, or was when I was there. Friendly is relative. If your are a tourist or visitor they are VERY friendly, especially if you are a patron of their business. If you move there it might take a while for the natives to see if you pass muster. The fact that I was from Montana and you are from Idaho puts a foot in the door of "sizing up the new comer". There's a pretty nice shopping mall, a bit larger than Grand Teton Mall near you, and some interesting shops. If you like fishing and hunting, as I did, there's plenty of that. It's a good sized city, about 50,000 so you'll find some 'culture' but the major part of the permanent population is rural locked in 60s mentality, even in the city proper. If you're from Idaho Falls you won't have culture shock as would somebody from Los Angeles or other large cosmopolitan city ;). I personally liked it except for the *&^&* snakes and I missed the snow covered mountains and forests I was used to from living in the NW Montana Rockies. The average pay scale is comparatively low but not much different than Idaho. Cost of living is pretty much the same as Idaho. There is no state income tax and property taxes are pretty low. I'd say that if you liked living in Idaho Falls ( I have friends I visited a lot there) you'll settle just fine in Casper.

Good luck on your new adventure, I have a feeling you'll do just fine and be happy there.
