OT cleaning the hardwood floors- again

I read in People magazine about a household cleaner called Fabuloso. A rapper named Kim was gushing about it- of all things! It's a goofy name but it's a fine cleaner. But the real thrill (if there's ever a thrill in cleaning! LOL) is that it comes in the most delightful scents and the scent lingers for two, three or more days! I have the lavender and it comes in a baby powder scent and ocean breeze or something like that. I emailed and found out it's great for both laminate and hardwood floors (diluted in water) and full strength is fantastic for cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen. My whole house smells heavenly!

You're welcome!

Sounds good to me! Grocery store item? Now ... who do I get to wash the floor for me?

Small town America here- I bought it at Wal-Mart. Around here they say "If it's not at Wal-Mart you don't need it". Sad but true- we have such limited shopping and I don't have the energy to run from store to store searching for what I need.

Sounds lovely, Leslie. Have you investigated and read the fine print to be sure that it's non-toxic? With 4 furbabies, there's just bound to be one who's a paw-licker and we don't want any sweet-eyed darling to become ill. Polly

I've seen it but never tried it. Glad to get some real feedback on it. The one thing to remember about that stuff is they have had kids drink it because of the colors and scent. Keep it away from kiddos. Not much problem for me and you though. Golden retrievers are smarter than little kids. : )

The reason I mentioned it - Yogi is an avid footwasher. We don't know if he's Baptist or Catholic but footwashing is serious business. He was raised by a fastidious Tom cat and his personal habits are seriously kitty-like. In the morning, he licks his paws and washes his eyes and behind his ears. Anyhow, glad to know that Fabuloso is good stuff. The powder cleaner we 'used to' like to sprinkle on our carpet is now New and Improved. Yick. It has an added scent somewhere between 2 parts Febreeze and 3 parts kerosene. Would probably gag a goat. Polly

I will have to look into this. As we speak, my hardwood floors in my kitchen are being refinished. Oh my, what a mess. Been a long time since my icebox and stove were in my living room. DD's graduation party is next weekend and we're trying to make the house somewhat presentable and we g ot a wild hair at the last minute and wondered how much this would cost. Why oh why do I do this to myself. There is so much other stuff that needs to be done and only 2 1/2 more days will I have DH at home to help as he will be on his way to Atlanta. He then returns home on FRiday just in time to make it to my nephews wedding/reception then the party on Saturday.

AAARGHHHH!!!!!

Do you have any idea how common allergies to scented household cleaners are?

They can also be extremely serious - scented fabric conditioner is one of the commonest causes of severe chronic childhood allergies. And once you've got such an allergy it will NEVER go away and will usually get steadily worse throughout your life.

I count myself very lucky that I didn't start getting paroxysms of sneezing from lemon-scented cleaners until I was over 50. The same allergy starting in childhood could end up lethal.

Then, Jack, I'm sorry but you are not invited to my house. VBG I love having a gently scented home and I will continue to do so because I like it. And I use and wear mildly perfumed bath and body products, too, cuz I like them. No friends nor family of mine have those types of allergies, so I am safe from harming them... and I will warn all visitors that my home smells like lavender.

More feedback on Fabuloso (and I think, if it was a rapper named Kim, it might have been Lil Kim...not that I listen, but I pick things up here and there).

Anyway, we were introduced to Fabuloso in 1997 when we moved to Panama...it's a wonderful all-purpose cleaner!! I used the various fragrances to find which one I liked the best. Jack, no need to worry about overly-scented house back then, all the windows were open ALL the time, except when the rain blew in. Back to Fabuloso....I settled with the lavender scent because it wasn't as strong, and when it was all said and done, there was just a clean smell to the house, not a perfumey smell.

As far as pet-safe, we had 3 cats in the house with us, and never had an issues with them and the cleaner, though I never read the fine- print to verify. When we first moved back to the US, I stayed with the Fabuloso, even though I didn't have any marble floors to clean, just a small kitchen-dining room combination and a really tiny bathroom. However, as I said, it's a multi-purpose cleaner, so when it was time to clean, EVERYTHING got cleaned: cabinets, countertops, floors, appliances...ALL got the Fab treatment. I even used it when I cleaned out the fridge and freezer...works great getting the bad veggie juice out of the veggie bin and the crumbs that get stuck on the bottom of the fridge. I've even heard of some people using it with laundry, but due to my sensitivities, I use dye-free, fragrance- free laundry detergent.

Yes, I have rather extreme chemical sensitivities, and because of that, I'm limited to what I can use for cleaners. Baking soda for carpet deodorizer added to all the windows of the house being opened works well for the most part. Lysol for frequently touched surfaces. Fabuloso is one of the few scented cleaners that I can use without getting a migraine that can last for hours and hours (even if I do take my medicine for it!).

Oh, and on a side note, it is NOT expensive at all and when diluted for use, lasts a very long time.

I read that carefully, Nana, but I'm not sure I'm bright enough to evaluate what I read. Does that report mean we can't take a bath in it . . . or does it mean don't lick your paws if you walk on a floor cleaned with it? Or what? Anybody? Polly

Polly, The way I read it is, if you hafta wear gloves & safety goggles, I think I'll pass. There are too many 'green' products that are safer. JMHO...:-)

Nana.......not using it on me quilts!!

Polly, the way I read it is that in large (and I mean manufacturing large quantities) you should be careful. The quantity that needs to be spilled for a report to be required is over 71,000 pounds. Don't think any of us are liable to have anywhere near that amount. I would not suggest drinking the liquid, but for most people the stuff should be as safe as any other cleaning product, and safer than many.

Remember even water can be classified as a "hazardous chemical" in the right circumstances. As for wearing gloves and goggles, that is a recommendation for "workplace", probably manufacturing, safety. And common sense. Some people will be more sensitive than others, but none of the ingredients seem to be in the "dangerous" category. And many people routinely wear gloves for all cleaning. Sounds to me like it should be a lot better for *me* than ammonia. (got more ammonia fumes than I should have at one time. Can't get near the stuff now.)

I've seen Fabuloso and wondered about it. Now I may actually try it. Thanks Leslie.

IMHO one problem with MSDS sheets is that they have to take into account worst-case/ industrial-scale scenarios. If you look at the MSDS for baking soda (aka sodium bicarbonate) you'll see things like:

Inhalation: High concentrations of dust may cause coughing and sneezing. Ingestion: Extremely large oral doses may cause gastrointestinal disturbances.

Accidental Release Measures: Ventilate area of leak or spill. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as specified in Section 8

Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing. Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.

So....is everyone wearing safety goggles when they clean their kitchen sink with vinegar and baking soda???

All this to say that the MSDS for Fabuloso doesn't look too scary to me.

Allison (who has to have a binder of msds sheets for each of the chemicals in the lab where I work....including one for sodium bicarb)

Many MSDS boil down to don't eat it, don't drink it, & don't bathe in it!

Yes, certainly - ban dihydrogen monoxide
