OT: Montreal

We're thinking of a vacation to Montreal this summer. We know the things we'd like to see, but does anyone know of a really good place to stay? On the nice end of the spectrum, but don't need five stars. Bonus points for close to the Jardin or the Basilica, or else the Metro.

Anything we shouldn't miss? I've heard there's a dearth of quilty places, but we do like to eat, poke in museums, take photos, etc.

Monique in TX where it is already too hot.

Hi Monique,

Since I live in Montreal I had to think a bit about hotels...never having stayed in one here LOL!

First off, anywhere in the downtown core would be fine - you can then walk to a lot of things and/or take the metro. If the weather is rainy there is an extensive "underground city" for shopping, eating, etc.

Friends who came to town with kids one summer stayed at the Clairion Hotel (on de Maisonneuve, on the western edge of downtown). It's within walking distance of the Musee des Beaux Arts, Crescent St (good restaurants), the green line of the metro.

Another friend in town on business stayed at the Hotel Gouveneur, Place Dupuis (on the eastern edge of downtown). The latter is a good location for catching the metro (2 lines cross nearby) and is within walking distance to St Denis street( more good restaurants).

One place that I've always thought interesting is the Bonaparte Auberge, in Old Montreal The restaurant attached to it is one of our favorites and we often have dinner there before going to the Centaur Theatre (practically next door).

And more possibilities - here some hotels that McGill recommends for visitors (all mid-downtown):

Holiday Inn Midtown-Montreal

420 Sherbrooke St. West Residence Inn by Marriott 2045 Peel St. Delta Montreal Hotel 475 President Kennedy Avenue Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile 1155 Sherbrooke Street West Château Versailles 1659 Sherbrooke St. West (north side) Meridien Versailles-Montréal 1808 Sherbrooke St. West (south side)

I don't have any idea of costs for any above but I'm sure they would all be fine places to stay.

When are you coming to town? If the end of May you can catch the biennial provincial quilt show (Salon 2010 at cqq.ca for info).

Or there is the Jazz Festival, or the Just for Laughs Festival, or the Grand Prix. Check the dates for these because hotels will fill up more quickly.

The Jardin Botanique is on the green metro line (and close to the Biodome and Olympic Stadium). The Basilica is in old Montreal (actually very close to Bonaparte) and is also near a metro stop.

HTH, Allison

Hi Jennifer,

As for travelling - I'm going up to Ottawa this weekend for the quilt show at the RA centre. I thought I'd go over on Saturday afternoon. Are you going to be there by any chance? Are any of your quilts in the show??

Thanks for asking Allison but health circumstances prevent me from spending time at the quilt show this weekend. I believe that it is hosted by the Eastern Ottawa (Orleans) quilt guild this year...I'm hoping that they will post photos on their website after the show. The weather seems to want to cooperate as well - cool enough for crowds! I'll think of you browsing the vendors and the quilts. I think that the rules for entrants is that guild membership is required and I am unable to participate in group activities like this because of my environmental sensitivities. Enjoy your visit to the city, jennellh

Howdy!

Yes, it IS already to hot here in Texas. I'm sure you'd like to see (as would I) a smiling quilter in the back seat of your car. I don't eat much, am really good w/ maps, and am willing to share my snacks. ;-)

R/Sandy- looking forward to a trip away from Tx. summer
