Well, while looking for a laptop for the DSD to use for college, I came across a great deal on Dell - for me! The deal includes a free 17" flat panel monitor, $100 rebate and a free upgrade to a 120gb hard drive. But the deal ends today so I have to make up my mind soon. Oh, decisions, decisions, decisions.........
Thanks, Diana. This would definitely be my "dream machine". DVD burner, 17" flat panel monitor and all. I am currently using a 550mhz machine, runs ok, but getting quirky. It uses Win98 which I really like, but my laptop and my DHs new PC use XP. I would hand this one down to my step son who is currently using - dare I say - a 133 mhz machine. With the new one my DH just got for his bd and a new one for me plus my DSS now with my 550, I could set up a home network so we could all utilize my cable internet. Currently the guys use a dial-up service. So I told my husband I was doing this for him! He didn't buy it!
I have all day to decide if I want the freebies.
My mom had a great saying.. guess by default its mine now, and it goes, a bargain isnt a bargain unless its exactly what you want. I couldnt tell if you were asking for advice, encouragement or hoping someone would talk you out of a new pc...so... My advice is not to upgrade unless you really need it or it will mean you have a trouble free pc instead of a cranky paperweight. Encouragement... oohh.. a new pc! Thats so fun.. go for it!!... discouragement... are you sure you want to spend the money on a pc instead of a new stash?? :-) Diana
Its likely you could still network with a machine that isnt top of the line, we did!... but.. it does sound as though youd get good use from a new machine and the old would be getting a good home too. Oh, go for it! LOL Having our puters networked is such a treat. I can easily send pictures and other files to DHs system and vice versa. He uses my extra HD space for stuff. Its handy too for the occasional LAN party too. Diana

Well, I did it! I couldn't pass up the sale! Got a 2.8ghz, 120gb hard drive (free upgrade), 17" flat panel monitor (free upgrade), DVD-RW/CD-RW, plus another DVD rom drive, floppy drive (those are now optional on some systems!) with a 64mb flash drive (one of those little key chain drives that look like a penlight flashlight), and a bunch of other goodies. Passed on the Office suite since that was another $350 and I have Office97 and Word
2002 at home. Oh, and a new scanner that scans business cards in it's own slot and scans photo negatives in it's own slot. Can't wait to try that one and see what I get out the other end. Plus, got it for 90 days same as cash.So, Dell says it will be shipped September 9th. I'm gonna miss my Win98, but at least now all the PCs I use will be Win XP. I can't wait...................
