OT: practiing climbing stairs

I guess I'll spend this week and next practicing going up and down stairs on my big fat butt! I've got to have surgery on my foot the 22nd and will be on crutches for 6 weeks. I asked the doc if I could go up and down if I did it by sliding down and crawling or scooting up on my butt. He grinned and said sure. Since my sewing room is in the basement I'll figure some way to get there! Guess I'll bring one of the machines and plenty of thread upstairs for a couple of weeks or so. Fortunately, it's my left foot, so can still work the pedal. I injured the dang thing Oct. 27th and have been in pain all this time. We tried 6 weeks of the big black boot, and 4 weeks of PT, with very little help. I have to have 3 tendons in the arch cut and re-arranged and another one moved to the heel area. Sounds like fun. Wow. The very thought of that injury makes me want to throw up my hands and run away screaming. Ouch! and then some. So sorry, Gen. Sending sympathy and hugs, Polly

Oh rats Gen. That sounds like no fun at all. I'm glad they can fix it though and hope it heals well and fast.

Hugs, Taria

(((hugs))) Follow doctor's orders and get plenty of rest! Don't overdo, so you get off those crutches quickly. But here's a situation where a big fat butt would be an advantage :-) You'll probably be down to a little skinny butt after 6 weeks! Roberta in D

Oh, that does sound unpleasant, Gen. I hope you manage. I managed a lot with the method you described! when I had knee surgery. A cushion in a plastic bag was most useful as you could sort of slide yourself around! Good luck, hope all goes well. . In message , Don/Gen writes

(((((Gen))))) Hope the surgery goes fast and well - and the recovery is quick! Going down stairs on your butt sounds easier than "hitching" your way back up the stairs!! I think you're very smart to bring the SM and a few projects up from the basement ahead of time. Rest the foot! ME-Judy

Owie! Wishing you luck and sending good thoughts your way. Going up and down stairs on your butt isn't too difficult, I had to do that for a couple of weeks after messing up my ankle. Just as a side note, it's not smart to walk two big dogs at the same time. Or, at least, when they decide to take off you had better be prepared! LOL

Seriously, good luck. I will be thinking of you on the 22nd and forward.

Gen, Take care and don't over do it. Get your sewing machine upstairs Girl! When I had my heel surgery and was on crutches for 12 weeks I also sewed left footed. Interesting but do able. I avoided stairs where possible.

OMG-12 weeks. Actually, I guess the Dr.really didn't say how long--just my assumption, and we all know what assume means! Thanks to all that have send well wishes. I guess it'll be an experience. Oh well, at least I get to go to the retreat this week-end, and up to MI Monday for my DGS's Blue and Gold Cub Scout dinner. He crosses the bridge to Boy Scouts then. Since I was den leader and Cubmaster for his Dad, it will be fun to celebrate with him. Gen

Wanna borra Sparkly)red sparkly cane)? She comes pretty handy for helping you walk .I can commiserate with you. just got outta DasDe Boot and have to face the fact that may be in/out of it for a coupla more years when the weather goes thru major changes here---mainly in dec/jan/feb. Forewarned is forearmed. Is there a way you can set up your SM on atemporary basis? DS put a folding chair behind the sewing table for me to rest my foot on. worked ok I just had to be extra careful getting it up/down so I wouldn't bang it. make sure you have what you need plus a half-dozen more.just in case. I was pretty lucky as I had help that could 'fetch and carry' for me.

let me know if you need any more 'BTDT hints'.altho we don't have stairs so I can't help there.

thanks. I'm going to bring the machine and ironing board, etc. upstairs before surgery I have several projects ready (they've been ready a LONG time)! I can also spend a lot of time tracing applique patterns onto Steam-A-Seam and cutting them out. I never lack for things to do. Does anyone know if there's any place that has more than 24 hours in a day?????(BEG) Did you find your lighthouse fabric? If not, I'll try to look in a couple of places while I'm in MI. Gen

LOL When I had foot surgery, I wimped out and rented a wheel chair. I was told absolutely *NO* weight on the foot for 6-8 weeks (Bone spur on the bottom of the heel, which,it turns out, is one of the slowest areas to heal.) And I was teaching at the time. yeah, right. Figured I would manage to get around easier and with fewer problems in the chair. Made sure my class room was set so I could maneuver before I went in for the surgery. Must have worked well, I ended up healing a lot faster than he thought I would. Was able to start driving within 3 weeks, and able to put weight on it within 5. At 6 weeks, the Dr. thought it had been 2 1/2-3 months since the surgery.

So good luck with it Gen. Do what the doctor says, and keep it(the foot) elevated.
