OT: QI ill

My dear QI is poorly and we are not positive of a good outcome. He is a

7 year old male cat and he has urinary tract problems. His brother had the same problem, but died when he was 2 and a half years old. We were told that if he got past 4 yo he should be OK, but sadly not. He is at home resting in a playpen (DDs are now 12 & 9, so don't use it much!) and is on a couple of different tablets. The vet wanted him to come home, because he wasn't responding with them, because he is so very nervous. He is a house cat, he's scared of his own shadow! My 2 DDs are absolutely distraught because of their memories of his brother, we tried to save him and nursed him for a month or more, still to have him put to sleep, and he was so very, very poorly in the end. This QI "Bigfoot" (yes, he has big feet - extra toes on each foot!) is weak and sad, but doesn't seem too poorly at the moment. It happened so fast, Saturday morning he was fine, by evening a bit off colour, but nothing to say he was ill, just a bit off. By Sunday afternoon poorly and a phone call to the vet - our pets are never ill weekdays, always an emergency call on a Sunday.

Anyway, prayers please, because even if he doesn't make it, I don't want him to go through so much like his brother. I'm not giving up on him, I just don't want him to suffer unnecessarily.

Thanks for listening, after all this time, I can't believe that we are going through the same illness again. My 2 other QI's (both cats) are keeping a careful eye on him as well - the eldest is 19 this year (and will outlive us all!) and the other is 1 year old and keeps bringing him toys.

Hugs to all that need them at the mo.

Sorry about this, Janner. It's awful to see them in difficulty and not be able to do much to help. . In message , Janner writes

Furry hugs and stuff on the way. There is nowt so miserable as a sick cat. I wish I could send over some of the rude health and boundless energy of our two. Nine and a half years old and still pinging off the walls!

I hope your dear QI gets better soon. UT problems can be tricky with male cats, I've seen plenty of them in my field of work. Happily, many of them do great and I pray yours is of that group. Give him a scratch under the chin for me.

I'm so very sorry that your sweet kitty is ill. Maybe good company and love can do for him more than the vet can. Give him some sweet talk from all of us. Polly

I'm right there with you :-( My little Molly is going to the vet on Friday for the final time. She has been a trooper for all of her almost

15 years. She has liver disease, chronic poly cystitis, she recently has surgery on her eye to remove an ulcer (technical name was corneal sequestrum) and she carried on. Lately she has been slowing down and has lost almost a pound in the last three months. For a little cat that started at 6.5 pounds, that is quite a lot. She is now exhibiting behaviors that tell us that she is in some distress. I can't ask her to do any more for me. I will miss her terribly, but know that I am sparing her some pain and suffering.

It doesn't necessarily have a bad prognosis. Our Ishmael had a couple of bouts of it and lived to 16.

It must be one of the most rewarding things to deal with for a vet - cat comes in a few hours from death, a simple procedure fixes him up to bounce around like a kitten again. (Most of the time, anyway).

((((hugs)))) to all those dealing with QI traumas right now. It can be heartbreaking. All we can do is try to provide the best for them.

My own Raz has not been seen for over two days now, very unlike him. I am dreading having to accept that my newest "baby" has left me already. My consolation is that he was rescued on the brink of death and was ecstatically happy while with me. There is still hope that he may return, but there are so many dangers "out there" that . . . . .

Janner,

I just saw something for cat's urinary tract health when I was looking for a specific item for my DH's urinary tract on Puritan Pride's website. You might want to check it out. I typed in D Mannose and it came up. Sorry to hear he's not doing so well....I'll pray for healing and sending positive thoughts your way. Launie, in Oregon

Raz has just bounced in, and other than wanting to eat everything in sight he seems none the worse for his absence.

Thankyou so much for all the messages and positive thoughts.
