My DH and I are arriving in San Francisco at the beginning of Oct to drive to Seattle for D nieces wedding on 31st.I was wondering if anyone can point me to a web site/ book to plan our drive or indeed know of any "must see" places along the route I might even be able to persuade dh to let me see a lqs or 2! lol. Also what is the weather like at that time of year?
Estelle, I don't know at all about this, but you might visit the AAA website and see if they have short term memberships for out of country visitors. If not, find someone in the Bay area (preferably, so you can pick up the info instead of having it shipped to you. If you do end up with needing it shipped let me know and I will see what I can do for you) to get the travel guides for California, Oregon, and Washington. You can also get a "Triptik" that lays out the best route, and so on. Wonderful resource. As for quilty stops, someone along the route will have to help with that and the weather. I know it is cooler and damper than Phoenix. (We were up in Belleview several years ago for a convention in the late summer....... and we thought it was winter weather for us. )
Be sure to have a good time, and we hope to see a travel report too.

Portland -- Fabric Depot. More than an acre of fabric. Mostly they give some sort of major discount (30-40%) every day.
Sunny
Oh, and after you're done in Seattle, think about driving over the Cascades and visiting little ol' me! :-)
There's a Bavarian village called Leavenworth about 3 hours east of Seattle. It's about 30 minutes from where I live. Colors will be gorgeous in October. Let me know if you are interested and I'll email you my phone number.
I got a selection of guide books from my local library and decanted the info. I wanted. Unfortunately can't remember the names of the books but as California is a popular holiday destination even our small library had some. I found the unglossy ones particularly good - they seemed to tell you about the more unusual places to visit en route, the glossies concentrated on the 'attractions'.
We were there some years ago in October, but San Fran. was the furthest north we went. The weather was like a nice sunny English summer day, but at night the temperature dropped.
Not only will you have the 'shower', you'll have Halloween too - the decorations are quite something.
Hi Estelle, Depending on your route, you might find these interesting:

- Our LQSs in Salem Oregon are:

Cotton Patch
4475 River Rd N Keizer, OR 97303 (503) 463-1880
- I heartily second the Fabric Depot (fabricdepot.com) suggestion - I love it up there! The Mill End store is also supposed to be good, but for some reason I haven't made it there in all the years we've been here. (Must be time for a road trip!)
Haven't been to many shops in WA, but I know you wouldn't have any trouble finding some in the Seattle area.
This is all assuming you can sweet talk the DH into some side trips! ;-)
- Crater Lake in So. Oregon is gorgeous, but I don't know about getting up there in October.
- Ashland Oregon is a great town, Shakespeare Festival, some really nice galleries and a couple quilt shops (one right downtown).
Weather in the Pacific NW that time of year pretty much runs the gammit
- could be indian summer or rain. It's marching band season in our house and we had everything from sun to snow last year. Pack layers!!
