OT - Trip to CA

DH and I will be travelling to the San Francisco area later this week. Anyone here near there? Anything in particular that is a 'must see/do'? Any LQS that I shouldn't miss? We'll be there Fri. through Sun. Planning on being in Carmel Fri. PM to Sun. AM at this point but don't really have any other set plans.

TIA, Kim in NJ

That sounds fun Kim! Are you ballooning over??! Sure there must be some quilt stores there....no doubt the local gals will fill you in. Cheers Bronnie

Hi Bronnie. It would be quite the balloon flight, don't ya think! This is the last leg of DH's Big 50 celebration! I feel like this birthday celebration has been going on for a year! Told him this was it - birthday was DONE after this trip. Of course, more trips are on the horizon - a bit more local and almost all balloon related - but the birthday is done!

If you will be in Carmel, go up the road to Monterey, to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They are open 10AM to 6PM. It is worth the price of admission. There is million gallon 3 story tall tank with all kinds of fish found in the outer bank of the Bay [sharks, tuna, mola mola, etc] plus a kelp forest display, sea otters, jellyfish and sea horse exhibits.

Cannery row is right near the Aquarium, also.

Don't know about any LQS.

The nicest fabric store is in Pacific Grove just down the hill from the aquarium. Back Porch fabrics

In Carmel there is a nice teeny shop called Findings they have ribbons and buttons and other cool trims. There are some fabrics but mostly for interior designs (crazy quilt anyone?) It's on San Carlos between Ocean and 7th in the Carmel Square shops. There are no street or house numbers in Carmel which can make finding things a bit of a trick. Their phone is 831-624-3700

Then there's Talbots. Yes, the mens tie company. They have an outlet in Carmel Valley. You can buy yardage there and they also sell scrap bags of silk tie fabric (again with the crazy quilts) and cotton shirtings. It's a ways down the road in Carmel Valley Village shopping center. There winery is across the street so you can sneak in some tasting if you like to do that. (13742 Center Street, Carmel Valley

831-659-4540)

SF is a big area with tons and tons of quilt shops and other cool things. Are you sticking to the Carmel area or will you be venturing elsewhere? If you are I can add quite a few stops to your list.

Thanks Ginger & Marcella! Just the stuff I'm looking for. I'll be printing this info to take. We're arriving Thrs. PM and staying near SF airport that night. Thought we'd do a bit of SF Friday before heading to Carmel. Have reservations there for Fri. & Sat. PM. Thought we'd do some 'touristy' things in that general area Sat. & Sun. before heading back towards SF Sun. PM. Our flight back is 1PM on Mon. and I didn't want to be in the car for 2 hrs. Mon. AM before sitting on a plane for 6 hrs. Thought we'd be able to find some place to stay Sun. PM closer to SF so it wasn't such a rush Mon. AM. Given that schedule, we're open to just about anything anywhere near those 2 areas. Don't really have a schedule beyond flight times. And we have a car - obviously. DH has never been to the west coast. The last time I was in that area was about 25+ yrs. ago for an even shorter time period! Not sure if it's 'seal season' but thought he'd enjoy seeing all the seals on the beach as well if it is. Any and all info is gratefully accepted.

The sea otters in the Monterey Bay are out and about, and there are several mothers with their pups young enough to be kept on their tummies ;) It is supposed to be great weather.

There is also the 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach, with has some fantastic properties to view.

A very talented quilter once made a gorgeous quilt featuring the Aquarium denizens. It MAY be in the collection there, or at least available on post cards. Even if not, it is a fabulous Aquarium; don't miss it. When you look for LQS, be sure to check Pacific Grove as well as Monterrey. Have fun. Pat in VA/USA
