Both of my daughters live in DC suburbs - one in Virginia an the other in Southern Maryland. I am constantly awed by DC even though I have been there many times. If you are there for the Cherry Blossom Festival it is a MUST. I have some pictures of it on my webpage.

Also musts are the Vietnam War Memorial, and just seeing the other memorials even if you don't go in.

The Smithsonian is another must, as is the Renwick Gallery, which is never crowded, and according to my daughter has very clean public restrooms that never get used because noone knows it's there.

If you get a chance to wander >Sorry for the OT, but DH and I are planning a trip to Washington DC. If you

Diana: I have been in DC fairly often. SonOne lives just across the River, in No. VA. Also, sometimes DH goes to DC for Business and I go along for a few days. When I do, I go sightseeing on my own. I love it!

First, get a tour boon now, from AAA or your library. Next, get Hotel NEAR Metro. Leave car in the Parking Lot in Hotel, and travel just about all places in the Metro. Clean, safe, convenient.

Good places to visit: The Monuments on the Mall (WWII, Lincoln, Korean, Viet Nam, Washington, etc.) Several Smithsonian Museums are on the Mall too. The Cherry Blossoms should be in Bloom, on Mall, near Washington Monument. There is a Parade one day then too, usually a Saturday in Mid April.

I've heard that the FBI and the Spy Museums are also good, but need advance reservations. D.A.R. Museum is quite interesting and the one with the most quilts. That one is near White House, and the Red Cross Bldg is nearby ... a quick peek in there to see the Renovated spaces and some artifacts.

There is a new one (Smithsonian Museum) out by Dulles Airport, so you'd need car for that. I think maybe an advance ticket, too. Mt. Vernon has been recently renovated; a short drive away. The Zoo is terrific ... quite a walk from the Metro Stop, but we've done it. You could drive there if you choose.

Are you coming down to the Williamsburg area? Just 2.5 to 3 hours away and way cool! Hey: I am here ... in Yorktown, which is way cooler than Williamsburg IMO, but not as popular!!

Do keep me informed as to exact dates. If I am up that way, maybe we could get together.

Smiles! PAT

I agree, the Metro is very easy to use. We were visiting from NJ and found out about it just by luck.

We went last year in April, great time to visit. Besides all the Smithsonian museums and the Mall, stop by the National Geographic headquarters. Their exhibits were wonderful! Roberta in D

Depends on what you are 'into' as DC has LOTS to choose from.

=46or exmaple, do you like history? DC is full of history; check out the National Arhives, the Museum of Natural History, and the monuments on the Natinoal Mall, not to mention Arlington. A short drive will take you to Manassas, site of the 1st and 2nd battles of Bull Run.

Go to the National Zoo [on the Metro Red Line] to see the panda cub. He is the essence of cute! And he will be going back to China, as per the negotiated deal, a couple of months after you are there.

Best to go relatively early in the morning [8-9 AM]. You might call the previous day to know when he goes out.

The four-thousand-pound "baby" elephant is worth seeing too. He so enjoys his morning bath!

The Zoo opens at 6 AM, so you can spend a couple of hours there before the other attractions open for business.

I go to a conference there in the spring. I always go to the national cathedral. I just love to walk around and see all the stained glass. Also the capitol is full of amazing art and sculpture. The food is good in the city, and I hope you enjoy yourself.

You're lucky to have a week! In addition to spending time on the Mall, try to go on a tour of Arlington Cemetery. If I remember correctly, the Changing of the Guard takes place every hour on the hour, and it's very impressive. In addition, you can see the Kennedy graves, the monuments to those who lost their lives in the Iran hostage rescue attempt and the Space Shuttle disaster, and even Audie Murphy's grave. We spent a short amount of time visiting the Women in Military Service for America Memorial - the first time I'd been there - and one of the exhibits contained artists' renderings of those who have lost their life in Iraq. Our time was limited, but I could have spent several hours there.
