OT webshots album

I posted a few pictures that I took yesterday around town. They are in my Flood 2008 album. The ones that hit me particularly hard are of the arts campus since both my kids spent huge amounts of time there. But the destroyed homes are even worse. I didn't take any of those. Too personal.

That's awful, KJ. What blow to the University and the community. I hope the water clears soon, so that they can start clean up and repair work. . In message , KJ writes

Sending hugs and prayers and safe thoughts to all of you folks in the MidWest! This flooding is unbelieveable! Keep us posted that you're O.K.

I guess it is just because the land is so flat out there that when the river breaches it's banks it can travel so far and do so much damage. The water has to go somewhere, and it seems it hits those towns near the rivers. So sad and so disruptive. There just doesn't seem any way to forestal this sort of thing. You build a levy and the darn stuff comes up higher the next time. I fear for New Orleans when something like this happens again, as I think it will. Actually, I have been watching CNN coverage and they are lining up the towns down river that are going to have to deal with this one. They are many and like ducks in a row. Sitting ducks. Good luck, and stay safe.

On our nearest big flooding river, we get warnings of the river levels upstream, so the further on towns get alerted to the danger. Most of these towns now have temporary flood barriers - I mean, they are permanent, but only raised if a flood is coming. They are mostly posts set into the sidewalks along the river, and steel 'boards' that slot into them to a height needed for that event. Quite ingenious really. The posts go back down into the sidewalk when the boards are taken away for storage until the next time. . In message , John writes

Some of the smaller towns downstream will get the brunt of what Louise had combined with what we had here. Although we are only about 25 miles apart, our flooding sources were different. Her river and my river combine downstream in a smaller town......oh dear. That town gave up on its sandbagging efforts and sent the National Guard on to where they might make a difference. I grew up in Burlington on the Mississippi...one of the towns on the CNN duck line up I'm sure. We are seeing a let up in the water level. There are a few roads open that have been closed for a few days. That will make it easier to get around town when the clean up starts.

Kathy,

I'm so glad you are dry enough to take pictures! It does indeed look like Katrina. I'm so sad about everyone's losses.

Hang in there,

Lenore

Oh my how I hope that everybody will be exceeding careful about the clean up. There were several people here who died from getting a scrape or cut from something that had been soaked in polluted water and the infection was swift and deadly. Polly

Yuck. My friend who was flooded out was at our weekly small group meeting. She's pretty shell shocked. We worry about her sometimes.....she tries to do way too much and worries about everyone. An example. After hearing a hospice nurse talk about the problems they were having visiting patients, today she went to a meeting about new hospice volunteers. She has 4 children living at home this summer (3 are college students) so she really doesn't need to be worrying about that sort of thing when they need to figure out living accommodations until their house is restored. I offered them a small house we own that is close to their neighborhood. Last night she called and politely declined, but today she said they might take me up on it. Decison making is so hard when stressed. No matter, I'll wait to see what they decide whenever they want to decide. I can't decide what color paint to put on my dining room....I'd probably be waaaay round the bend with their situation. It's so hard. OK I got distracted. She did say that they wouldn't be using friends to help shovel out their house, that there are professional crews to do that sort of thing. So I think maybe they know the dangers....(her DH is a doc.)
