OT what shall we wear?

Howdy!

W/ you on this, Kate. And that dress influence thing, setting a trend - the last Bride's Dress (30 yrs ago) was .. kinda'... well, hideous. Big plates of fabric appliquéd on the skirt, big floppy flounces of gush around the shoulders, and the damn' thing was too big for the young gal wearing it. Who thinks up this stuff?

Btw, what's w/ that emphasis on church weddings? People who never pass thru' the doors to actually "worship" all of a sudden MUST have the big church/cathedral production - what's with that?

Just thinking of all the money that's being thrown at this shin-dig, and the millions of ways it could be spent to actually do some good... no, I don't get it. ... I mean, that would finance a few dozen quilt shops for the next generation.

Totally agree where the money could be spent.

Well, if it makes you feel any better there isn't a lot of beating down the doors of churches here in So. Cal. for weddings. I can't remember the last church wedding I went to. I tend to hang out with heathens though.

I suppose that wedding all those years ago was about as good as the marraige. That is too bad all around.

I am with you on the money end of things but I guess it is theirs to toss as they wish. I think people get paid to think all that spending up though. That is kind of universal. I'll stay away from the festivities as much as possible. I just don't get into that stuff. Taria

Maybe program the DVD Ditto TMI Sweats, T-shirt, slippers (still a bit cool here)

I'll have to do it all on the sly though. Bert could care less. We'll have been in bed for a couple of hours and I have to be at work the next day.

God I hope it's not strapless. And I doubt it will be as it's a royal wedding. Just because. Do the brides not know that there is nothing uglier/dorkier looking than them always pinching the edges of the top and giving it a heft up because their cleavege doesn't do the job.

Just my thoughts.

Exactly why I didn't have a strapless wedding dress. No way would my (lack of) cleavage have supported anything.

In this particular instance a lot of it is to do with the fact that the Queen IS the head of the Anglican church, and so will her grandson be in due course. The whole family attend church en masse on a regular basis.

For normal mortals a church wedding is optional but I'm not sure of the proportion of church vs civil wedding over here. A few years back they increased the number of venues that could be used for civil weddings so that it was possible to get married somewhere attractive rather than a concrete office block.

My last two, last summer, were both delightful. One lady was my age, a romantic fighting with perpetual Being Sensible. We managed to fill her dream of having a white wedingown that suited her age, and she was delighted with it, the wrap, the bag, and the fascinator I made out of the scraps!

The other was a lass I've known since she was a stroppy teenager, and the daughter of a close friend. She and her bridesmaids we all darlings.

And then there's the strapless dress with the low cut back. The lady bends over at the waist and the dress bends with her. The lady straightens up...... and the dress stays bent over! Serious 'hefting' going on when that happens! VBEG

PS: Even major cleavage can only do so much to keep the dress in place! LOL

It isn't the cleavage that keeps the dress in place: it's the internal structure built into the bodice, like a corset. But if you want it backless AND strapless, you also need copious amounts of 'Tit tape'! :D

I know- that was a gentle poke at Steve's comment about the cleavage holding the dress in place- "giving it a heft up because their cleavage doesn't do the job."

Shall we 'educate' him, Kate??? LOL

Well, for once the timing is perfect for HM's Loyal Subjects in the far-flung Antipodes.

7.30pm on a Friday night means a lot of Australian families will watch it. Not that I am a particular fan of the monarchy, I shall watch it for the spectacle and the answerable questions - will it rain? will everything go like clockwork? will Kate trip over William's 4 names? I do hope it all goes smoothly though. The nicest royal wedding I have seen on tv was the Danish wedding with Mary (Our Princess!) and Crown Prince Frederick. I just loved their tradition of the bridal waltz where the couple danced and the guests slowly moved towards them in a circle. That was so beautiful to my mind.

I just have to climb in here and add to Steven's comment: Do the brides not know that there is nothing uglier/dorkier looking than them always pinching the edges of the top and giving it a heft up? Actually, there's nothing uglier/dorkier that any garment that requires constant adjustment be it a tastefully tossed scarf or even a belt that won't stay put. In fact, I do hate the current hairstyle where we must suffer watching the hair being tossed, slung and swiped out of the eyes. I can't believe I just used the word 'dorkier'. What will our grandchildren think? Steven should be more careful of his influence. Polly

I used to sew bridesmaids dresses and occasionally help the lady I worked for with the brides things. It cured me of ever wanting to sew clothing again.

Ugly is bad enough, but sewing the same ugly dress times 6 or 8 just was the worst. Why do brides pick such awful dresses for their bridesmaids to wear? And having each pick their own dress doesn't come out looking any better, strangely enough.

Friday I will be in bed in my flannel jammies sleeping away. I'm sure it will be hard to avoid pictures and re-caps on-line or on tv during the daylight hours so I'm sure I'll see plenty of it.

No way I'd get up that early to watch someone else's wedding! LOL Bwsides, Friday is set-up day for our quilt show and I need to be awake to help keep track of everything that needs doing. A summary on the news at night will do me very nicely. :) Allison

The brides are _usually_ well behaved. Boy howdy! the exceptions are real rippers though!

No, more often it is the mums that are walking talking Trouble. Most of the moms that show up are there to Make Sure You Do Everything Right. Mom is the one that will lecture me on how to properly put in a zipper on a dress that does not have one, then turn around and question the authenticity of the pearls, complain that I charge too much for making lace when you can buy it at a shop cheap, and then tell me that I can certainly get silk satin much less expensively.

I promise I do not have any brides or their mothers tied up and gagged in a closet. At least I don't think so.... Lord knows some days I have been tempted!

But you know what the absolute worst is? The ones that make brides and their moms look calm and sane by comparison? Prom moms. Maybe it is just that anybody who spends that kind of money on a prom gown is a little off in the head to begin with.

I did one for a fetish wedding where the tape was not quite enough. Had to go with with "Boob Glue". There just wasn't enough to the dress to hold much of it in place, at least not above the waist. Below the waist was a full length skirt of tremendous sweep. Above, well, think ribbons and body glitter with a few chains. Sort of ribbons cross gartered over her chest and glued in place.

I don't think she'll wear strapless. I've designed her dress in my mind - it will be a square neckline, long transparent sleeves and a somewhat fitted skirt - not body hugging but not poofy - sort of a slim poof. I think she might just wear some kind of feathers in her hair rather than an actual veil - she seems to like feathers. Oh yes, and the corsage - a simple white orchid. Apparently she ordered three dresses from three designers in case one design was leaked to the press - like who cares? None of us could afford it anyway. :-)
