OT: your prayers and thoughts are working

Just got back from a week's visit to my parents. My dad exited ICU went to the orthopedic ward and then went to a rehab center! He is off the vent, no more feeding tube, no more catheter, no more oxygen mask. He is being weaned off the oxygen (has nose tubes), eating soft foods (after 5 weeks of not eating), about

95% coherent, asking about his fall and what happened in the four weeks he was out of it, and is walking with a walker short distances, and becoming more positive about his progress (therapists say it takes a while for the brain to catch up with the body). He spoke to a psychologist (nurses thought he was going into depression) about his plans, which include slowing down (he is 73), getting a van/small SVU, and planning some trips. We were so happy to hear he has plans as he was acting like he was going to be wheelchair bound. He has developed "shock/stress induced diabetes" which they think will more than likely disappear when he is recovered. The therapists all say he is doing very well and seem surprised he has come so far in a short amount of time (about 1 1/2 weeks in the rehab center). It looks like at least another 3 weeks (doctor said they would not dismiss him until he is safe and feels confident) and we are so pleased with his progress. The best part....he finally knows my name again!! (He couldn't remember it two weeks ago). We thank you so much for your prayers, good wishes, and positive thoughts. It has been a long road but my dad says, "I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now". Grace

Tell him to Stay Away From the Light! Just a bad joke because he seems ready for one... :-)
