Poll: Do you prefer Flat or Fluffy looking quilts?

It depends.

For baby quilts that will be used in the crib - puffy (also they are small and even a puffy batt fits in the SM)

For everything else flatter, but it essentially depends on what batting I have available in the right size.

i really prefer the "flat" look for any quilt. my mom likes a high loft, i prefer low. Usually buy W-n-N. it's the best for machine quilting. But i do like a low loft Mountain Mist type for hand quilting. easier on my carpel tunnel. i think it's a personal preferance, and where the quilt takes you.

Flat, but not smooth. I love the texture of lots of quilting on cotton batting. It goes all soft and drapey after washing. When I want raised areas, I do fake trapunto: quilt a design on the top only, using wash-away thread in the bobbin and a scrap piece of batting. Cut away excess batting right next to the stitching line. Layer your sandwich and baste as usual. Quilt the entire piece, stitching right next to the "trapunto" design you quilted before. The background areas need to be completely quilted for best effect. When the quilt is washed, the first round of thread dissolves and you can remove the loose top thread, leaving one line of quilting with 2 layers of batting under the raised design. Roberta in D

Thoughts on batting:

"high loft" doesn't necessarily mean "warmer", "fluffy" doesn't always lead to "warmer", nor does cotton mean "lighter weight"

some polyester batts are hot, hotter than a similar weight cotton or wool

quilting has much to do w/ the perceived weight of a quilt; more quilting, close quilting, heavy machine quilting makes for a heavier quilt

flatter batts (my favorite Hobbs 80/20 is kinda' flat off the roll or out of the bag) don't make quilting stitches disappear; my handquilting, fairly close as quilting goes, shows up just fine

whatever the batting, many quilts need more quilting, IMO; "good enough" isn't always ;-)

Flat or fluffy: I prefer Finished quilts. ;-D

Ok. When I'm making a quilt (its been ages) I just want the batting nice and soft cuz I hand quilt. As far as snuggling a quilt, I like flat.... If you need my address, just ask. ;)

I agree with much of what you say, Sandy. However, I do believe that some quilts would benefit from less quilting than they have. Depends on the purpose and the materials and so on. More quilting can help a quilt last longer, but some I have seen have been so heavily quilted that they seem to be almost board stiff--even after washing. Not cuddly at all.

To throw a monkey wrench into the works...... I think that machine stipple quilting is over done a lot. There are times and places for it, but ............
