POWER! I HAVE POWER!

Okay, for the most of you who haven't heard about our fiasco here in St. Louis:

Over half a million Ameren UE customers in the St. Louis area (corresponding to over 2 million people, I've heard) were without power for the past few days due to two horrible storms. My husband and I have not had power since

7:30 pm Wednesday. I've been doing fairly well, considering. He, however, has been spazzing out about not having his beloved television. The temperatures on Thursday and Friday were sweltering, with heat indices (that's the plural of index, right?) of around 110 Fahrenheit. We had four storm-related deaths in the area, and well over 250,000 customers STILL don't have power. It's going to be a rough go of it here in St. Louis for at least the next few days.

We're lucky; we've had power now for about an hour. (Had to check the group as soon as we got it!) I know that there are thousands and thousands of people in the North part of the county who are struggling (it's not the rich neighborhood by any means). Please keep them in your prayers tonight. And pray for the 2,000+ utility workers who are desperately working to get the city and county back up and running.

Anastasia

--who's rather peeved that this isn't warranting more media attention outside of the St. Louis area. It's certainly affecting more people than the outage in New York, and yet I hear about them..........

Well, welcome back, Anastasia, and yes, you're right. We had no idea your area was without power in this heat. At least we get plenty of warning and practice for our 'no power' skills. Isn't hearing the refrigerator humming just the sweetest sound? Polly

Howdy!

"I got the POWER!!!!"

Glad to hear it, A.

Down here in too-damn'-hot Texas we heard about your storms, your power "outages", your heat, your trials and travails. Been reading and hearing about it for 5 days. Was going to fuss about you hogging the rain but it looks like we're better off without that kind of storm (we get plenty of them, usually in May). T.V. I could do without but without a/c I'd be in the car, leaving town. With the quilts.

Welcome back!

Gosh darn, for a minute there I thought this would be a thread about the remote control.

Sorry to hear about all that. Glad you're getting through it. I wouldn't even want to think about not having the AC at the moment. Good Luck!!

I was wondering about you and hoping you were okay, but if you had no power it wouldn't have been much use emailing to see how things were going for you. Sorry for the misery you've had and your DH without his television. Welcome home!

That's just it: there was very little rain associated with the storm. Just winds in excess of 90 mph. The major water damage came from a break in a main on the north side of the city which flooded one of the major highways. It was most likely caused by the huge number of folks up North opening hydrants to stay cool.

Polly, the hum of the fridge was glorious, but having light in the windowless bathroom was the bigger joy for me!

Leslie, the email was never lacking; I can access it via my cell phone. That's one thing I certainly made sure I'd never be without! I had to get word to my mother and worried friends somehow!

I did hear about the power issues in St. Louis and was wondering if we had any newsgroupers there. We've had power issues in Philly as well which were a result of terrible storms earlier in the week. These folks were without power for almost 5 days, some are still waiting to be reconnected. And then I heard about the power issues in NY. I no longer take for granted the simple flipping of a light switch. I hope all are ok from power issues where ever you are on the planet.

Sections of Queens, NY have been without power for over a week. Con-Ed said 25,000 customers, but that translates into hundreds of thousands because they consider an entire apartment building to be just one customer.

To see how big business has manipulated power in the past, you really ought to see the movie "Enron - the Smartest Guys in the Room. I can't help thinking about that everytime I hear about these power outages and how there is nothing any one can do about it.

In Queens, they don't even know why it is happening. They have restored power to some with temporary generators.

Congratulations, being without power is just terrible - glad to hear you're back to normal. It certainly has been a rough week across the country!

That's the storm that hit us Wednesday night too. Lots and lots of wind damage here as well and many people without power (both City Water Light and Power and Ameren) until at least Friday. Guess the storm rained itself out over Springfield because roads were flooded here that have never flooded before.

I'm glad your power is back! And yes, we've been hearing about the St. Louis power outage in CA on the news every day. Why do you think we aren't?

Having that light come on is the best thing for me. No matter how often it happens, I am always shocked the the light doesn't come on in the refrigerator.

Oh, me too, Sandy! I made it 4 hours one time without A/C, then loaded up and went to Mom's!

OTOH, the lights went out one winter during an ice storm. I did just fine with my handwork and lanterns. I was finally cool enough too!

I heard about it, Anastasia! Said a quick prayer for you all, too! Thank goodness it got cooler over the weekend.

For me it's being able to flush to toilet! No power no water - toting water from the pond to flush to toilet isn't fun!!!

That stunned me when I first heard that! We don't have electric toilets around here! lol.

Our toilets aren't electric, but the pump that pumps the water from the well is powered by electricity. No electricity, no water. This was quite a shock for a girl from the big city, but I can't imagine moving back after living in the country for 30 years. We now have bottled water and a water cooler for emergencies, however we must get water from the pond to flush ;-)

I was teasing, Bonnie, I knew the pump was electric, not the toilets! heheheheheh. I think I'd be tempted to move the toilet closer to the pond. And it always amazed me that some folks' phones don't work when the electricity goes south. I know my cordless phone doesn't. I had a hard time finding a phone in the house that worked the last time our lights went out. I think I have one phone left that isn't powered by electricity.
