I have heard it as "brode-a-ree" purse. Long "o" in brode as in "rode" with a "b".

I've always heard it pronounced: bro (long o) -- der--- ee purse (at least that is how they did it on Simply Quilts)

For the new quilters among us -- it is when you cut out something (usually flowers) and appliqué it to a background (for best results the background on the floral fabric matches the background of the appliqué background.) Often used for borders or other accents.

Do a google image search for broderie perse and you'll see lots of pictures of it.

I've always heard it 'broiderie' as it is spelled... Perse as pers e - small additional pronunciation of the final E. I think it's a French expression.

It really is a French expression (says the former French teacher ;) ), and Kate is exactly right about the pronunciation. :) It's spelled "broderie perse", which explains why it's not pronounced with an "oy" in it. It literally means Persian embroidery -- just a little trivia for you.

Another piece of trivia for your class: imported fabric was taxed heavily in England to help the 'home' fabric trades of wool and cotton. So, to be as economical as possible with it, ladies cut out small pieces and appliquéd them to whatever they were making - typically with large 'empty' areas. This technique was then called 'broderie perse'. . In message , Kellie J. Berger writes

I actually should have said that Kate is right about how we pronounce it in the US. In its original French form, it would be just as Sharon explained. :)
