I hope I can word this so you can understand it. When you have your quilt in the hoop, are you supposed to stitch from side to side, or top to bottom, or does it matter? I seem to be able to work better when I go from top to bottom. That's just me.
Any input would be appreciated.

Most of the hand quilting books I have been reading all show the hand quilting to be the easiest coming towards your body, ie from top to bottom. However, they also state that even though it is most common, it is best to do what is most comfortable for the quilter. And that practicing some other alternatives, like from top right to bottom left, top left to bottom right, etc, might produce other comfortable positions.
I have found a slight diagonal in my hand stitching is quite comfortable, but my hand quilting practice has only consisted of approximately 2 hours of stitching time!

How do you do it without a hoop? Isn't it hard to keep the stitches even? (Yep, I have been thinking of trying without a hoop and I'm glad to see that someone else goes without as well!)
