I have just bought a silk batting and it says quilts up to 3.1/2 inches apart. Does this mean that the stitching has to be 3.1/2 inches apart or what. Sorry for senior moments but I cannot get my head around this.

Yes, absolutely! If your quilted areas are more than that, your quilt won't be "smooth" - it'll be lumpy as heck!
LOL, trust me, we've ALL had those - the other day, I had to do the math (subtract the difference between I and hubby's age - 3 years - from how old HE is) to figure out how *I* am!
Personally, I believe that no matter how awesome our kids are, they STILL kill brain cells!! :)

So I went home and created one for myself. I went one step further and knitted a small piece ,which I wired into a gold tone frame I made. I made the frame by wrapping the sturdy wire round a 2inch wooden block that my DH made for me. It makes a very nice pendant.
It is quite simple, you thread the chip beads on some fine wire. Cast on between 10 and 12 stitches and using garter stitch. Push a bead up to the needle and secure it with the next stitch. Do this every other stitch and knit the next row plain. On the third row place the bead in between the bead on the previous bead row. For the bracelet after you have the required length of beaded knitting, carry on knitting without beads to make a backing piece for the bracelet. Knit it the same length as the beaded bit and fold it over. Make loop and button fastening on the ends. About 4 will be required. Shirley
