Quick question

What needle do you use for normal piecing with cotton fabric?

Are you talking hand piecing? I found that for me a size 11 between worked best. It took me a while to find what worked well with my style of hand piecing - a lot of trial and error (well, not so much error, but a lot of trial!).

For machine piecing, I use a 60 with a 50-weight thread. That's the best way for me to get the infamous "scant quarter-inch."

Hope that helps, but I'm looking forward to seeing what others say. Who knows, I may find something that works even better!

I use 80/11. The type I use is usually microtex or sharp. . In message , Sunny writes

My SMs love 'new' needles so I buy 100 at a time from AllBrands in Baton Rouge for $ 49 and free shipping. The needles have a green band, size 75 and are for quilting all though they pretty much are just fine for anything else. Today we made a shade of limousine film for the kitchen window and the green band sailed right along. Polly ( not affiliated but always easy to bribe)

Hand piecing: Roxanne #11 sharp, with two more used as pins.

Machine: Schmetz #70 universal.

Lots of people use a jeans needle, but I haven't found there to be a great deal of difference when using one.

I have a little box filled with Schmetz microtex sharp needles (machine) -- 90/14. I have been using the quilting needles and now I'm out of those so I'm starting in on the sharps. Just wanted to see what other people do. It appears that the answer is 'whatever works and pretty much anything' and that makes me happy as these needles seem to be working pretty well.

Size 70 or 80 universal.

That is like one size heavier than I use, though I prefer a universal to a sharp for piecing. Sharps are what I use on silk, microfiber, or suchlike stuff. Are the microtex the ones they put out especially for microfiber? Seems they put out or at least advertised a needle for that, but I could be hallucinating.

Anyway it is not a difference so dire I would change the needle if I was in a hurry.

An 80/12 universal needle is usually what I use.
