Quilt shops in Oklahoma?

I really enjoyed the shop in OKC on the north side of town. DH and I have been twice while visiting relatives in the area. The shop in Norman is nice, smaller, and I have heard under new management since my last and only visit (old management was bad!). I have heard nice things about them since then. In the southern part of OK are some shops that might be worth looking into also (Durant and Ada). Definitely check into local guilds. OK is different from CA, but I found very friendly when I was in college and I was a lonely little Yankee!

Hi Karen,

I think I had a similar experience when I left the Washington DC area. New York City was only three hours away, driving or on the high-speed train. I had access to so many cities and so many fabric shops. Baltimore was only 1 hour 10 minutes from where I lived in suburban Virginia. G Street in Rockville MD was at least 40 minutes away, but still in the area. (Yes, they built one in Chantilly eventually.) For

8 years I even drove 35 minutes to Warrenton toward the Virginia foothills to teach school.

So here I am in Reno, Nevada. One JoAnn's -- not even an ETC. One Hancock's -- a small version. A handful of quilt shops. Another JoAnn's in Carson City, about 45 minutes away. A couple of places out in Fallon, a little over an hour away. Sacramento is only 2 hours away. But that two hours is nothing like two hours in a metropolitan area. It's two hours over the mountains through isolated areas. I think there is something about driving through the desert and isolated mountain areas that makes it seem farther. Sounds like that's what it is like for you in Blanchard.

I've gotten used to it. I like it here. I don't miss the traffic, tornadoes, and snow-and-ice storms from out East. I've made friends and we do the driving together to those seemingly far away places. Driving 12 minutes to my school seemed like a long drive these past two years! (The kids wanted to know why I lived so far away.) There are actually two quilt guilds in Reno! And Carson City feels closer every day. I'd rather drive for 35 minutes here than sit in traffic for over

35 mimnutes out East.

I don't think you're spoiled. Maybe a little homesick? Doing some adjusting. And soon there will be someone else's home that you'll be able to have meetings in. Hang in there!

I am hoping that if I joiin a quilt guild I will be able to find out where more quilt shops are. Maybe I just haven't given it enough time here. Yeah, I think I really must be spoiled. Karen

Mmmmm that donut was good.... Taria is getting slow in that California heat ;-)

I don't know if you can or can't... I was raised there.... lived there for over 23 years.... but I'm quickly approaching not living there years being more than lived there years and I don't make it back much these days.... so I'm betting they may not claim me any more.... me being citified and all ;-)

Maybe Pig, or Tricia (AT&T) (former Okies if I remember right) or Christina from OK or the newly delurked gyrlcentric (current Okies)

I'm still an Okie. I've just lived in Texas for 15 years now. I was in the Serendipity Quilt Store in Tahlequah last week. (family reunion) I have been in Oklahoma Quiltworks but not on this trip.

Without getting out a map, I'm not sure how far Choctaw is from Blanchard, but it is really close to OK City and has a great little store. Home is where the Heart is... quilts and gifts.

There, I looked it up for you! I wish I had thought about going there when we were just in OK. Oh, well. Now, I'll just have to go back!

The website has some quilt shows listed.

Good luck and I hope you begin to enjoy Oklahoma soon.

Thanks Cindy I will try to attend the next meeting at the Norman quilt guild. I went to the Newcastle quilt guild meeting yesterday. It's a small group, but it feels good to be around other quilters. They meet every Tuesday, so I know I will get to be around other quilters at least once a week now :-)

Thanks Jan. I emailed Marilyn this morning. I am thinking about buying a quilting machine, and Marylin is a rep for Gammill. Unfortunately the Strawberry Workshop is closed down. That would have been great since it would have only been about 2 miles from my home. I ended up going to the quilt shop in Norman on Monday afterneen. It was much nice than I remembered. I don't know if it's just my imagination or if the new owners have made it nicer (more fabric). Anyway, I had fun browsing through all the fabrics and patterns. Karen

Thanks KJ I guess I should be used to this by now. I'm a military wife. My husband has been in the Air Force for 17 years.

I know there are people who have never seen it. And I know I am spoiled, but I can't imaging not ever seeing the ocean. That's one of the things I miss about living in California.

Ahhh.. a woman after my own heart! Love my Gammill Just be very careful when in Norman to not mention your love of Stillwater or the OK Cowboys ;-) I'm glad you got to meet some new potential friends! And for the record.... I saw the ocean rotfl... but when I moved to Philadelphia, some people would ask me if the Indians still ran wild scalping people or if I had running water.... after awhile I started just having a little fun with that image Since the little town I grew up in was Phillips 66 headquarters, it was a sohpisticated little place. ;-) And of course... now I live in the Kansas City area. It just takes awhile to find the quilters some days... lets face it... we are an indoor sport ;-)

Hi Kay Thank you for your kind response. Yes, I probably am a bit homesick. I really like it here, I just want all my friends and family and favorite quilt shops to be here too ;-) My husband drives about 40 miles to work each day. He doesn't seem to mind at all. I guess I'll just have to get used to driving a little further to get to the quilt shops. Traffic is much better here than in CA. so it shouldn't take me as long to get to some of those quilt shops that are further away. I went to a quilt shop in Norman on Monday, then yesterday I went to the quilt shop in Oklahoma City with a friend. Then we went to the Newcastle quilt guild meeting in the evening. So things are looking up. I probably just haven't given it enough time yet.

Thanks for the welcome Sandy

I would love to go to the quilt show in Dallas. I plan to go to the quilt show in Norman later this month. And I went to the quilt show in OK City in January. But I want mooooore....! We moved here from Northern California (Fairfield area) in August last year. My husband is in the Air Force. He spent a year in Korea and then we came to OK for his follow on base (Tinker AFB) He will be retiring from the Air Force in a few years and we are planning on staying here permanently. I don't know how to post pics (of my quilts) but if anyone can tell me how to use Web Shots I will gladly post some. I don't usually take pics of my quilts before I give them away, but I have some quilts here that I can take pics of. I have lurked and occasionally posted here before so I know how this works. No stash pics or directions to my stash will be given. I know that would just be asking for trouble! We have three horses, three dogs and two cats but none of them are trained at protecting my stash from stash raiders. However, all of our pets are learning how to inspect quilts, fabrics, patterns, and other quilting supplies. So if you would like, you can donate some items for them to practice inspecting ;-)

HI Kathleen, I went to the Norman shop on Monday and you are right, it is under new management. I really enjoyed myself. People here are very friendly. That's one of the things I really like about living here. It's pretty easy to make friends, I just need to find more friends who quilt.
