Michigan Quilt Shops

Hi Ladies, We will be leaving Sunday, heading up to Sault Ste Marie. We'll be traveling thru Michigan entering from the southeast, heading north bypassing Detroit and then straight up to Sault Ste Marie. Any good shops that I should know of? This is a long ride (10 hours) and I will need some breaks to stretch my legs. Nothing better than a walk thru a quilt shop! Of course, I'll have to buy also. ;)

The Fabric Fair in Bay City, The Ice House in Grayling are 2 that come to mind. There's also a branch of Country Stitches in Flint Gen

Hi Pam,

Here are a few that I can think of to recommend. The Ice House in Grayling is well worth stopping at. I live in the UP, about a 4 1/2 hour drive from Grayling, and my quilting buddies here often talk about their trips to the Ice House.

Material Mart is located in Midland, MI, where I lived about ten years ago. I'm more interested in garment sewing than quilting--just recently got into quilting a little--so I didn't find a lot there that interested me, but they do have some nice quilting fabrics. Just not much garment fabrics, and keep in mind this is based on my memories from ten years ago.

I've never been to Haberman's, but it's near the Detroit area, and I've heard good things about them.

I love Field's Fabrics in Kalamazoo! They have several other stores, but all are on the western side of the state and probably not convenient to the route you are taking.

If you are crossing the Soo to the Canadian side, I REALLY LOVE Fabricland, in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada! I may be a heretic for recommending a Canadian store, but WOW! My husband left me there while he and the kids went to the Bushplane Museum, and two hours later I hadn't chosen what to buy yet because I was still checking out what was there.

Enjoy your visit to Michigan. Have a safe and fun trip!

Hi Gen. The Ice House must be darn good- 3 people have recommended that store. I checked a map and looks like we will be close to it so I do want to go there. Thanks for the info!

Forgot to mention Country Stitches in Lansing (or maybe it's East Lansing).

I've been there several times but never bought much because, again, at the time, I wasn't much interested in quilting fabrics. But for an enthusiastic quilter, it's probably a great place.

When you get back, let us know where you stopped and what you found.

Petoskey has a little LQS called Calico Corner or something like that....It's across from the temporary casino hotel basically on 131 but if it isn't on your way, it's not fantastic enough that I'd recommend a detour.

New to the northern Michigan area, I'll be watching this thread with interest -- didn't have much in LQS that I can recall in the Ann Arbor area where I lived -- we had a Country Stitches (?) satellite store, TSWLTH (reg and ETC), Ypsilanti had a Hancocks and a WalMart.

OH! Wait! Ypsi does have a cute little LQS in an old barn near/at Michigan Ave and Carpenter Road, just off US23. I just didn't get in there much after I realized what they were (you'll see signs for Antiques -- that's for the building next door to them) because I wasn't finding the time to work on the craft. I believe the Ypsi shop is called The Quilting Season. If you are on Michigan Ave, headed towards downtown Ypsi (which I think should be approx. east but Michigan Ave is a spoke wheel that runs diagonal) and you've just passed Carpenter Road, you'll have a gas station on your right, an Aunt Millie's outlet on your right, the entrance to a trailer park on your right, and then it is time to start looking on your left for the Antiques sign and the red barn (the barn is the quilt shop). Not a must see by any means BUT if that happens to be an area you are stopping in for a pit stop and stretch your legs stop, it could be nice to wander about. Also, going through that area, don't trust any signs you see for rest areas on 23

-- they've taken them all out in the vicinity of A^2 and Ypsi because of the correctional facility -- a good excuse get just off the expressway and head to that gas station to use their facility and Oh Look Honey, a quaint quilt store ;)

Best Wishes, T.

There's also Viking Sewing Center on Jackson in Ann Arbor. That's my favorite--I even just drove 4hrs. each way for a class I REALLY wanted there. Their fabric selection is great. There's a shop in Belleville--Threads and Treasures. The shop is behind the house-parking is not good, but I usually park in the pre-school lot next to it. Good quality fabrics, with 20% off all fabrics, even Hoffmans. The owner is a very nice person. I actually do most of my quilting fabric buying at those 2 stores, rather than the ones in the Columbus area. Gen

My goodness, so many LQS's, so little time! I've written them all down, will have my son sort thru them and decide which are doable. Then I'll just need to sweet talk hubby into a sidetrip or two (or four or....) Thanks everyone :D

Hi Pam, I will chime in only to say that after my recent trip to Western Michigan that they have an abundance of wonderful shops. If you ever get there, do check out these shops! The owners I met were just a delightful as their shops! As a public service to the quilting community I have to mention Peackock's Pieces in Sturgis - she welcomes quilters to bring your machine in and sit and sew if she's not conducting class. Shops at the Marshall House in Marshall has a fabulous Asian fabric collection and last but not least Quilt 'n' Go (my DH found this place for me!). NAYY... Enjoy your trip! DeNise

Just remember that this is YOUR vacation also. You do what YOU want and he does what he wants--so you 'sit and wait on him' whislt he is doing his thing and he does the same for you. Worked for us for the last 33 yrs. Mine takes me to the store and sometimes comes in and sometimes catches a nap--we always get the local newspaper for him to read if he doesn't do the above. If he thinks I'm in the store too long he will come in a carry my purchases or help me decide on which one would be the best for......' as he usually knows which project I'm buying for.
