Quilting/sewing room makeover!

Connie-

The thread storage is three 36 in. wide X 12 in. deep kitchen wall cabinets- they are standard height which is 30 in. I just stacked them and screwed them into the stud in the wall- one screw in each cabinet. The fabric storage is two 18 in. wide and 12 in. deep by 84 in. tall cabinets that they call 'linen cabinets' also one screw each in the wall studs. The wall cabinets were about $106 each and the pantry cabinets were about $153 each. Try Lowe's and Home Depot for their ready made cabinets. You might look for a dealer of Kitchen Kompact cabinets

That's the brand name and I used their least expensive line in oak called Chadwood. When I worked for a contractor many years ago he used that brand name exclusively- but he used mostly their upper line of oak cabinets called Richwood, I think- those cabinets are all relatively inexpensive and nicely made. I have used them in six or seven houses that I built or remodeled plus this house's kitchen, laundry room and now my sewing room. HTH

Wow! Leslie, I love what you've done with your room! My sewing room is

10" x 8" -- even smaller than yours -- and I also have my computer desk and filing cabinets (with printer on top) in here. With a strange layout of window, closet and door (at an angle!), I don't think I can do much with my room, but I can dream. And your room is an inspiration. :)

Wow! I have a ruler bigger than that ;-)

I take it you mean 10' x 8' :-)

Not sure how big mine will be (haven't measured), but I think it is smaller than either of those. It needs to have everything else cleared out and the sewing stuff moved in properly - sometime.....

Sandy-

Any bare wall space that you have can be covered in kitchen wall cabinets- right up to the ceiling if you have a small stool. Also look for storage places under other pieces.

Maybe you can squeeze out just a bit more storage.

LOL! Of course you're right -- I'm still pretty tired after my very long day yesterday.

Lovely!! However, Ken isn't too happy now because I told him I wanted that, and that and..oooh, that would be cool....lol. My room gets tackled next year over the summer. NOt a whole lot of work to be done - making 2 small closets into 1 large closet, putting sheet-rock up on the

2 outside walls - may put it up on the other walls, but not a priority right now, want to be as energy efficient as possible and there is NO sheet-rock on ANY of the outside walls!!

My biggest problem right now is deciding what would really make it say that this is MY room...I like WAY too many colors and such. oh, and getting things off the floor is a major thing too. I may make DH take the futon into his office when it is finished because, personally, I'm sick of it taking up space!

I'm a big color nut, too ... and what I did was find a VERY neutral green (my MOST fave color) and use that ... the neutrality of the shade makes it so it doesn't interfere with other colors in the room - whether it be a QIP, stash, or general decor.

When you have one color dominatin' a large space (like a wall), it really influences the surroundin' area - includin' the way you SEE other colors. Doesn't seem like it would, but it does. :)

Leslie,

You are amazing! I love what you have done with your sewing room. I really love your sewing cabinet. Did you have them cut the hole for your sewing machine? What does it set on?

Wow, nice job!!

I ordered the Formica countertop and told them the size of the cut-out and where I wanted it positioned and they cut it out for me. I used L-brackets to put a piece of 2X12 lumber (29 inches long) from the side of one drawer cabinet to the other and the sewing machine is sitting on that 2X12. It was pretty easy- once I managed to get down on the floor with my 'trick hip'! Getting up off the floor was even more... uhhhh... challenging. :-/
