Rubik's Sewing Room!

Jul 30, 2012 17 Replies

The Great House Shuffle has started...

The GMNT outgrew his room (all of 5'11" wide by 8" long, plus a square for the door!), so is moving into the sewing room.

Su and I have outgrown the sewing room, so are moving officially into the conservatory!

Himself will be moving his work station from the dining room to a study created in the GMNT's tiny room.

And this is the short-term solution until we can get the loft conversion built!

So, sewing room. This is what I've been doing this week!

Currently, the living room is a bit of a tip, and the other end of the sewing room/conservatory is a bit like the White Knight's pudding!

Cea, He Who Was The Cherub has grown into a bonny lad of 6'3" and almost

18 years old. He is now known as the Giant Mutant Ninja Teenager.

And Su and I are a professional partnership. We can be seen here:

Great pics and site, Kate. I do see a blank wall screaming for shelves-to-the-ceiling, maybe with a braced hanging rod for garments. Stud-mounted, from the weighty look of your costumes. And you have a skylight--OOooooo.

NO! Boy Wonder cannot be that old. Impossible. That would make me...(turns back on everyone and begins counting on fingers...runs out of fingers, bends over and removes shoes...runs out of toes...). Some things are best left unsaid. It is such a pleasure to see all those fine garments you've made. Cea

Not so much skylight as sky roof! It's my 'new' conservatory, and is 3m wide and 7m long, with a triwall plastic ceiling.

Shelves will probably need to be a bookcase, as the actual walls are drylined brick. And we are aiming for a hat stand, as the clothes rail got horribly in the way.

Thank you.

T'lad still has the dimples, but he's left school and will be off to college in September!

I am just so Glad you reported in; I was about to ping you to see just what you might be up to or if we needed to begin a fund to bail you out. You, in my mind, were completely innocent of all charges, of course. We did the Rubiks about 2 years ago. 'They say' you forget the pain. 'They' lie. Polly

I just can't believe how quick time flies (like a banana, as we used to say). When I first met him, I remember that he definitely had that little-boy-look about him. And now he's turned a man! Yeah, about time to move when you can't close the door anymore once you're stretched out in your bed.

Well, more space is fine (and I desperately wish for 'a room of my own') but by the time the budget is ready for the loft conversion, don't you think the GMNT might have turned into a man with a place of his own? And I'm not saying that you might take so very long for that conversion thing, it's more the rate he's growing into a man I'm hinting at. I wonder what he will be then? YG (Young Giant)?

Well, at least it's summer so... Oh, hold it, yes, it's >this< summer. So, no depositing things for a while in the garden. At least there's no snow. ;-> We are using our roofed terrace as an outdoor kitchen, although we have to get the water from the guest bathroom, and the fridge is in the living room. It feels a bit like camping, and to be honest, the pleasant anticipation makes everything bearable, doesn't it? Gosh, what a great sewing room you two now have. I'm pea green with envy. Don't you wish that cutting fabric wouldn't take up so much space, though? Imagine a (Sci-Fi) machine that downsizes stuff like that to perhaps 50 % and then blows it up again to the proper size once the space-consuming part is done! I'm going to invent that and then be a billionaire! ;->

BTW, you know that I have little knowledge of English literature (I wouldn't have been able to guess what 'ther' is, since we are reading the book in German, and I can sing it by now, or almost): What is 'the White Knight's pudding'?

Keep on refurbishing!

U.

Shutting the door is doable... OPENING it fully is not! And I have seen neither hide nor hair of the floor in I don't know how long!

YG it will be! Thank you.

Mum's flat has sold, so funds will be available soon. Not in time for us to get things done for this September, but it should be OK to go ahead next summer.

I'm thinking a Bag of Holding like Hermione's: You poke things in of any size you like, and Lo! When you want it, that's the first thing to hand when you reach in!

It's from Alice Through the Looking Glass. The white Knight rescues her from the Red Knightand then escorts her to the edge of the square where she becomes a queen:

'Now the cleverest thing of the sort that I ever did,' he went on after a pause, 'was inventing a new pudding during the meat-course.'

'In time to have it cooked for the next course?' said Alice. 'Well, that was quick work, certainly!'

'Well, not the next course,' the Knight said in a slow thoughtful tone: 'no, certainly not the next course.'

'Then it would have to be the next day. I suppose you wouldn't have two pudding-courses in one dinner?'

'Well, not the next day,' the Knight repeated as before: 'not the next day. In fact,' he went on, holding his head down, and his voice getting lower and lower, 'I don't believe that pudding ever was cooked! In fact, I don't believe that pudding ever will be cooked! And yet it was a very clever pudding to invent.'

'What did you mean it to be made of?' Alice asked, hoping to cheer him up, for the poor Knight seemed quite low-spirited about it.

'It began with blotting-paper,' the Knight answered with a groan.

'That wouldn't be very nice, I'm afraid --'

'Not very nice alone,' he interrupted, quite eagerly: 'but you've no idea what a difference it makes, mixing it with other things -- such as gunpowder and sealing-wax. And here I must leave you.' They had just come to the end of the wood.

So in my childhood, a 'white knight's pudding' became the term for any ecclectic mix of things that didn't really belong together!

I will! There's a long way to go!

'Twas Brillig and the Slithy Toves...' was always my favorite part. Loved quoting that dramatically to my siblings as part of bedtime stories. Scared them and kept them in their proper sibling places. And parts of 'Alice' do sound like a bad drug trip... Cea

I'm glad that I'm not the only one... I read Alice first (and for the only time) when I was about 13 y. o. and it scared the s*it out of me. Or rather, it had the quality of a bad dream you can't wake up from. However, since it was holiday reading and we didn't have much else with us (five weeks in a Stuga in Sweden with no electricity or running water, and a real outhouse) we all read it. But it left a great feeling of uneasiness with me, and although Kate recommended it so strongly that I bought an English edition, I haven't gotten round to reading it. I will, once I've growed up.

U. ;-)

This is so true! You finally get to all the "home improvements" to make room for the whole fam damly, and the kids move out!! Or kid, in your case.

And then you're left with a 3000 sq.ft. empty nest. But you find ways to fill it up....

Guests! Always with the guests, me. Just imagine what fun we could have on a Mad Sewists of the Apocalypse weekend!

Su and her Himself Roger could put up one couple in her sewing room on the futon sofa, I could have a couple in the loft room, a couple in the spare room, and a couple on the living room sofabed. And we'd have room for several additional sewing machines!

TSK! Katey, me girl! Best be careful with these open invites--you're liable to have a few Yanks come visit--and bring you more fabric for your attic hoard. Maybe when monsoon season is over... Cea

You'd be welcome!

The Mad Sewists are Me, my friend and business partner Su, and Suey. When we get together, this sort of thing happens!

And yes, in one pic Su is poking a hole in her frock with a chopstick!

We are attempting to recruit a fourth and fifth mad sewist...

Ah, yes, organized chaos! The bestest kind. Is that a bowling ball in the bag on the floor?

Chaos?? I see no chaos! If you want chaos...

(The used to be sewing room that is now just a dump! :D It will son be empty.)

No bowling balls here. The blue and white bag is Suey's overnight backpack

I am so glad that other people manage to have space that looks like that on occasion.

OK, overnight backpack, but I'll bet it could double as a bowling bag. ;-)

Kate I do love to click on your live journal and explore! Your sewing is wonderful! Barbara in SC

Thank you. We've been having fun recently... :D
