Re: Hanging Sleeve

Have my binding all ready to put on my 'Singing the Blues' little quilt and the sleeve cut out. I read that it should be 5" + the 1/4" on the long sides for seams, and then the width of the quilt less about 2".

I know I stitch it into the top seam when the binding goes on, but have found conflicting views on where I stitch the bottom line (slip stitch by hand). How far down from where the binding is stitched do I sew it? I have no idea how thick the dowels its to be threaded on will be - the display will be for little quilts 24" x 24" or less, so they won't be heavy.

I've finished all the quilting and am now doing the embellishment, and soon little blue bird will have his beak! I've started at the top where the sleeve will go, so won't sew through it by mistake.

At the moment it's eyes down every free moment (and there seem to be too few of those - too many other committments, I must learn to say 'no'!!) so I'm not reading much - just a quick whizz through. When it's done will post pictures.

As I don't like to risk any of my hanging sleeve showing at the front, I don't stitch it into the binding (as I usually only do quarter inch bindings). But, that is not to say you should do that of course. I usually sew the top about half an inch from the top of the quilt. Then with the bottom still 'free', I take the sleeve to within a smidgen of the quilt top, finger press the bottom to make a pressed fold, and sew along that pressed fold for the bottom position. I do pin that top in position, and the short, open ends, too, in case anything shifts in the sewing process. I think most of us do our sleeves differently, though - so be prepared! With a given width of 5", I don't think the poles/dowels will be of a very large diameter. We are given 4" finished for Malvern and NEC quilts. . In message , Sally Swindells writes

I sew down my hanging sleeve with the first pass to attach the binding to the quilt front and tack it down by hand on the bottom of the sleeve. BUT... When I prepare the sleeve I get it all finished- raw edges turned under and stitched into a tube- and then arrange it so the seam is in the middle of one side which will be a back of the sleeve against the quilt. Then I press the one edge that will be the top of the sleeve and then fold it so that it is not exactly in half- the front side (without the seam) will be about 1/2 in. wider than the back side. I stitch the sleeve down by hand at it's bottom on the pressed in crease so it will have a 'bulge' in it. When you slide the dowel inside, the 'bulge' will accommodate the dowel and the wallhanging will hang nicer without a bump where the dowel is situated.

We aren't given any width - the 5" was the width given in my beginner lesson instructions, and I haven't put sleeves on anything since then!

The Schedule just says 'Must have hanging sleeve attached'. I'll check with our Show Secretary and see if she has anything in the big file of general rules, but I don't recall anything regarding size of sleeve.

I am just assuming something of broom handle size.

Sounds a good idea to make the dowel bulge at the back rather than the front of the quilt.

Leslie: I pretty much do as you do. I would like to add that I sew the long seam *wrong* sides together. That way, the seam allowances are against the quilt backing, not flopping around inside the tube. Also, I hand stitch the rear short edges to the quilt back so that the pole will go through the tube, not behind it. I hope this is clear!

So, the 5" will be halved? I don't think that would give broom handle diameter quite enough room? Might be a good idea if you can get any further info. What a nuisance, when you want to get on with it. I use a 4" finished for mine at home, where I use roughly broom handle diameter most of the time. . In message , Sally Swindells writes

Yes, I sew the back of the short ends down, too. . In message , Pat in Virginia writes
