Happy Dance & things I learned

The pillow-trans-wallhanging is done, including a machine-embroidered label and the sleeve is on too. Hand sewing. Blech! My fingers are numb from all of that.

Things I learned while making this:

  1. It takes more than a 1" strip to make 1/4" binding. Next time I'll cut it wider, and trim if necessary
  2. If no one bugs me, I really can read the instruction manual and figure out how to make the Phaff do lettering.
  3. Making a hanging sleeve is easy, but putting in on requires hand sewing. Back to tab hangers if at all possible.
  4. Doing something for someone who doesn't expect anything is very satisfying. (it is a gift for one of the pastors at our church)

The pictures are even up. Here:

If you can do a blind-hem on your machine, you can sew the folded edge of the sleeve down by machine. I usually do it by hand, but I have done it by machine a few times.

*Very* nice, TerriLee! I'm sure your pastor will love it! Did you buy the center panel, or did you print the Psalm onto fabric yourself?

I you like this one, I think you'll like the next one even better. :-) It's binding is pinned and ready to be sewn on. No sleeves (tab hangers), and the label is designed, but not stitched. It's for DH in honor of getting his Masters degree (last June, I'm just a "little" behind.)

Oh, that sounds like my kind of a trick - can you give me details? My right hand literally hurts today from all the hand-stitching yesterday.

Thank you so much. I'm pretty sure he'll like it. I'll let everybody know on Sunday eve.

LOL same here, Julia. It may not look as "pretty", but then who is really going to see it??

If you know a quilt will need a sleeve you can also sew the top edge in under the binding. I do this on some quilts. Then just need to do the "bottom" edge and sides of the bottom layer of the sleeve by hand. Since it doesn't have to be as "hidden" as a binding hand stitch, it does go pretty quickly.

Actually, I bought the Psalms as a set at the sewing expo this year. There are 6 or so printed on a FQ, both on white and the creme that I used. (I bought both, of course) There was a quilt pattern called (I think) The Comfort of Psalms, for $15 or something like that, but I'm not much for pre-designed things. I think design is the best part of quilting. :-)
