Re: Press 'n Seal in the UK

I saw the Gingerbread lady today (the one who wrapped her gingerbread for our Summer Sale in Press 'n Seal.

Unfortunately she is just recovering from knee surgery and said it had affected her brain too! As far as she can remember it is called Press 'n Seal and she bought it at either Lidl or Aldi (the cheap supermarkets) in Lowestoft. I go there very seldom, so can't just check, but she did say that next time she goes she will bring me some, and then I can check the name. However, as she is still on crutches it may be some time.

I explained why I was asking, but she was a little bemused, not being a quilter!

So, if you have an Aldi or a Lidl nearby, try those. She says it is much better than clingfilm!

Why don't you ring them, Sally? You could ring both - or Lowestoft might only have one. Actually, I think I'll go and check on bt.com! . In message , Sally Swindells writes

I did have a look for both, on the BT, royal Mail and Yellow Pages sites, but none had anything nearer you than Essex or Norwich. I used 'supermarkets' in the search, they might be under something else. Sorry the idea didn't work. . In message , Sally Swindells writes

Hi Sally, we have a Lidl near by, about a quarter mile down the road, so next time I'm in I'll take a look. What do you use it for in quilting?? Elly

It lives with the Clingfilm and is for wrapping food. One side feels slightly sticky so it 'clings' better.

You trace your quilting design onto the non-sticky side with a permanent marker and when it is VERY dry stick it over the bit you want to quilt. As you can see through the Press 'n Seal you can position it easily.

Then you just quilt along the lines and tear the PnS away at the end and everyone thinks you have been really clever (see the doves I have done on two quilts!!).

The UKers have been relying on kind friends visiting USA to bring some back as it hasn't been available here .... but perhaps it is now!

We are taking some visiting friends sightseeing tomorrow and may pass through Lowestoft, so will be looking out for either of these stores. May also squeeze in a trip to my favourite LQS - Sew & sos in Bungay (they do all the big shows with their fabrics), but a lot depends on the weather and our visitors.

I know there are lots of Lidls and Aldis around, but this is the one the Gingerbread lady went to. I presume they all have pretty much the same stock.

I think they have phone numbers listed on their websites as 'a store near you', Pat.

My local Aldi does not have a listed number. If you want to phone them you have to go through a head office number. When I had a problem with my computer bought from Aldi, the manager used a mobile phone to phone up for me. I do not think they have land lines in all stores.. Shirley

Had a look in Lidl today and couldn't see anything - Aldi will have to wait until next week!

Thanks Sally. Not sure where the nearest Lidl is to me, but pretty sure the Aldi here doesn't have it. Might be called something else though! Roberta in D, where they don't speak English

I got some called Hold and Seal from Aldi this morning. It cost 1.69 per roll. It was in with the special offer bins and not in with the other cling films and foils. Shirley

Aren't you clever! You are the first to find it! I wondered if they were using the Press 'n Seal name as it hadn't got their logo printed on it - so is actually better for quilting. So 'Hold and Seal' it is. Wonder if its made by the same people or someone else has nicked the idea!

Was it in the special offer bin because it is a new product they want to promote, or because no one wants to wrap their food in sticky paper! Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Three cheers for Aldi!!

Well done Shirley . I'll now try to find my nearest Aldi - though I have plenty for now, but you never know! . In message , Shirley Shone writes

That's what drives me crazy about Aldi -all the good stuff is seldom part of their permanent inventory. If you miss it the week it's on special offer, then it's gone forever! Roberta in D

It would be interesting to know the manufacturer/distributor and get in touch with them to find out their other outlets.

As you may know they have special offers each week and it was in with those. I usually find that when they have gone that is it until maybe months later. I once bought some sticky stuff remover and found it great. However it was not replaced until it came on offer 6 months or so later. So usually it means when you see things in those special bins you stock up with it. This stuff is made by Presto and called Press & seal it measure 21.7m x

30.0cms. So roughly 65 feet by 12 inch. It has a US patent. Shirley

Thanks. The website is a bit out of date as it doesn't mention Hold and Seal - so have asked them. We can only try!
