Rotary cutting mats........

I was wondering what everyone has.

I have used the green 'self healing' mats before (still have a small one) but when I was in the market for a new mat about 8 months ago I found that in the larger sizes the green mats are very expensive and my lacal quilt shop actually had the white MegaMats as well and they were a bit cheaper so I tried it instead.

After using it for a couple of months I found that I liked the feel of it MUCH better than the more popular green mats, so much so that I will likely never buy another one again. I have also found that my blade stays sharper much longer using the white mat as well.

What is everyone else using?

I have 2 green 23X35, a bright blue 36X24, several smaller grays and just ordered Joann's "Sew Essential" (white) 36X60 which is the size of my cutting table top. I hope the Joann's cutting mat is a good one???

WOW! Let me know how you like the 60" one. I am in the process of looking for a longer cutting table and that would work like a charm!

I have a super-neat arrangement of big Olfa mats. My cutting table has the unfortunate challenge of sitting just inside the door towards the garage. It is a drop-off for whatever is coming in the house and I am unable to protect it. I keep the oldest and most worn cutting mat at that end of my table. There are two more large Olfas beside that old fellow. Your question suggested to me that perhaps I needed to check and replace any of mine that seemed worn. Mercy! No matter what your mat preference is, using one beyond a reasonable amount of wear is costing you dearly in blade life. And just how many miles has your mat survived? Polly

What my mother used to do about this problem:

Put a trash can under the table (or near the table) and inform family members that anything found on this table will go in the trash can. Then DO IT!! That'll stop 'em! ;o)

I replace my mat when there are too many grooves that don't go away. One or two grooves I can work around but too many and it's just a pain to cut.
