ruler bag

Does anyone have a pattern to carry rulers and mats? Something like an artist's portfolio.

Why not make your own pattern? Just figure a reasonable measurement for the largest ruler -- perhaps 1.0" to 1.5" all the way around -- and go from there. Naturally, the more rulers you have, the larger the "extra" measurement will need to be. Choose what style of closure and handle YOU want.

or buy an artists portfolio and cover it with a layer of quilted patchwork to your liking. who's gonna know if you dont tell'em. the structure of the portfolio will protect those rulers etc better than just quilted fabric would. j.

You made me think of posting, what I think is a great tip. I take ongoing Adult Ed quilting classes & our teacher told us how to make a carrier for your cutting mats, so they won't warp if you have to leave them in the car. You buy a piece of poster board - (it's about 1/4" thick - is that called poster board?). You cut it in half & then take a couple of yardsticks & cut them for all 4 sides of the poster board. You line up both pieces of poster board, stick the yardstick in between both pieces on three sides (2 short sides & 1 long side) - glue it down & then run clear tape around all three edges. You can slip all but the extra large cutting mats inside & then take the remaining piece of yardstick & that is your "lid" if you will. It takes the risk out of toting your cutting mat around for classes or sewing day with your friends. I used to hate taking my cutting mat anywhere, because I risked warping it if it was a warm day. This eliminates that worry!

If it's 1/4" thick, I think you must mean foam core. Foam core is two pieces of thin poster board with a thin layer of foam in between and it is VERY stiff and sturdy. Poster board is usually about as thick as the stuff cereal boxes are made of. Foam core comes 1/8" and 1/4" thick. HMMM -- it's so stiff, I don't really think you would need the yard stick. Regular poster board WOULD need to have the yardsticks glued to it to make it firm enough to keep a cutting mat safe. Either way, sounds like it would work wonderfully!

I read it as the yard stick was used as a spacer - to have the two sheets of foam board separated to make space for the cutting mat sitting in between. Pretty smart, I think.

Me - I warped my cutting mat today :-( Right now it is sitting under a pile of books after being heated with the hairdryer. Worth a try...

Thanks for clarifying the difference between poster board & foam core board. Yes, you are absolutely right - is is foam core board & Hanne is right - the yardstick is to be used as a spacer. When I first put mine together, I couldn't find a yardstick, so I just put tape around the 3 sides, but tape alone, without the yardstick does not hold up.

I also like the link that Trixie posted for rulers & small cutting mat. Will have to add it to my "to do" list!

AHHHH -- I had just come from hours & hours at the dentist when I read your post so obviously didn't "get" it :-). The yardstick sounds like it would work great! CiaoMeow >^;;^<
