Last night I happened to think I "needed" to check the date because from now on it will be an anniversary. It was also the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day. Since my dad was a WWII veteran, I thought it was appropriate.
Kathyl, I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing one's father is very painful, I know, and I hope that soon you will be able to remember more of the good times than the pain of his loss.
On the anniversary of my FIL's death (July of last year) we were in "luck" - a local group was settin' up a local Vet's memorial and we were able to buy a "brick" with his name engraved on it. My hubby and his dad were VERY close (the sweet man raised him, alone, after he and my MIL divorced over 30 years ago) and that small gesture (it was a "surprise" for my hubby - he actually cried at the dedication) made my hubby feel so much better. It was one more way that he was able to celebrate his father's life.
Is there anything similar that you could do? What was one of your dad's favorite hobbies or interests? If he was a gardener, you could have a tree planted in his name ... or if he loved animals and was a humanitarian, you could donate a heifer or some chickens to a small poverished village ...
Doing so might not only help you feel less lost this Christmas, but you'd also be able to celebrate his life with others, help others in need, AND give a gift to the entire family.
My Dad's HB was on the 18th. Every Christmas we celebrated his HB right after dinner, then Santa came for the little ones. When I was little, but old enuf to remember, Mom gave him a surprise HB party . His boss had him work until noon so Mom had time to get everything out--and ppl come over before he got back home. Fortunately the weather co-operated (Northern MI can be pretty snowy and icy that time of year.) Dad wasn't much of a 'party-goer' but he sure enjoyed that one :)

Oh Kathyl, I just got home from a trip to Chicago and read your sad news. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sending all my hugs and prayers to you. They won't take his place and aren't intended to. They are just for your comfort and love. Because I care.
