sewing machine recommendation?

I am in the market for a sewing machine, and will appreciate recommendations. What I want is a machine I can set up on my dining room table to use, and then put away when company comes. I don't need a lot of fancy stitches, and have no interest whatever in embroidery, and would like to keep to a modest cost. When I was a child I used my grandmother's treadle machine, and my mother's Singer, so I am only a step or two ahead of a beginner.

What is your budget? What stitches MUST you have (i.e. zig zag, multi-stitch zig zag)?

Howdy!

There's been much discussion about "which sewing machine" the past couple of weeks; you can google for comparisons & opinions:

because it does exactly what I want it to do, while sitting on my dining room table. Enough stitches to play with, not too fancy for me, it's dependable, portable (not heavy), quiet, user-friendly. More about it:

Got mine from the local sewing machine shop; good price, great service.

Good luck! R/Sandy

Sandy, how come the features say there are 50 stitches, when the specifications sheet on the same link says there are 25?

Howdy!

I dunno'. I didn't write the copy, I just use the machine.

Just checked: this machine has 25 stitches, multiplied by the width of the zig-zag & speed & length of stitch, etc. I've tried them all, did some machine appliqué, & went back to why I bought it: I use the go-forward & reverse. ;-) Very dependable machine.
