Do you have a favorite, goes-with-anything neutral? I did some massive (and fun) shopping yesterday to refill the beige, tan, cream, toast and other names bin. I stayed with names I know like Northcott and Hoffman since I couldn't judge the feel of it in person. For several years my reliable choice has been Crush by Nancy Crow. What do you reach for when you need a neutral? Polly

That's one I needed to know about, Amy. I saw a nice neutral by Red Rooster but wasn't familiar with them. Shopping online does have a lazy advantage of comparing prices without having to dress or drive but nothing beats getting to touch the fabrics. Polly

I'm old-fashioned -love the subtle texture of Moda Marbles and the gazillion colors available. IMO just about any color is a neutral in the right position. (Sort of the weed vs. flower theory.) Roberta in D

Yes, well, Roberta. I knew 'neutral' wasn't a good word for my question since there are those of us who believe that red and/or purple are neutrals. Sometimes I just have to have a quiet fabric to use as a background. Polly

I'm really old fashioned. Muslin. I had a hunk of tot lt. beige that I used for years but that is now gone and missed.

Here is a link for Polly's favorite. I had to go look. Neat stuff:

We are of like minds on that one Polly dear! I've long loved Nancy Crow's designs and ever since I found Crush, it is my first favorite. Was doing some stash stuffing and found another fabric that I couldn't get enough of - a lovely golden hue - while checking inventory it turned out, sure enough, another color of Crush. Lorraine

I haven't held it yet but a beauty I found is Northcott Novelty Print Butterflies. There's a little bit left at Odds N Ends if you want to take a look. It is quite a bit nosier than Crush but I could not pass it by. Polly

AHA, I was wondering if you really were thinking of background/blenders. My favorite depends on what I am working on, and what the main fabric is and my mood at the time. I love Moda Marbles, and others that are the same type of thing. For some things I like the Fusions line from R Kaufman, a little more movement and such. Sometimes Dimples are good. There are some Thimbleberries that work well as background/blenders too. There is also a line called "Chrystal" from ??Michael Miller??? that is nice, as is one called "spray" or something. There are so many different ones that sometimes it is difficult to decide. BTW, I occasionally use Kona solids from R Kaufman, but really prefer the Kona Bay ones. Kona from RK can be a bit "beefy" for some things, and is a bit less finely woven.

As for color for a "neutral" that depends entirely on the quilt. I did a string quilt sampler for a class sample. Used a turquoisey Moda Marble for backgrounds/border/sashing. That was my neutral for that quilt. Even used the fabric wrong side for some variation in tone.

Polly,

If my eyes don't deceive me, I JUST saw that fabric at a new (to me) LQS. I managed to resist only barely, because I had some other fabrics I "needed".

IIRC there was another colorway, but I could not find it online.

I can not even imagine going to a " new, to me, LQS". Well, I really can imagine. There's one close to where we like to vacation in Tennessee that claims to have 8,000 bolts. That should keep me happy for a few days. I wonder if they welcome Yorkies. I'll ask. Yogi is a very well behaved shopper; he especially enjoys lots of customers that tell him what a precious puppy he is. Man! at the ego of this QI. Polly

That really is beautiful! I love TOTs like Moda marbles or those lovely Fusions fabrics. Batiks in neutral colors really float my boat, too.

I keep notes. You have to when 'if memory serves' doesn't. Have added lots of newcomers you've recommended to my list just below 'white'. (according to the list, the lovely pure white is Kona Bay and just underneath that listing is Michael Miller's fairy frost with a bit of silvery glitter.) Thank you all for sharing your findings. I'm appliquéing stars of red, white and blue on a quilt to be send to a military hospital and realized I needed you to share your favorite neutral discoveries with me. All the places I've ordered from have sent me notes that they have all been shipped. Oh boy, oh boy. The place I ordered a Father's Day gift from also says it has been shipped. (They took 12 days to decide whether to ship or not. I won't go there again.) Polly

I really like the tone on tones. But, there are some neutral batiks too (I LOVE batiks). Depending on the fabrics used, muslin makes a great neutral.

I think it really depends on the colors you are working with.....

Happy quilting,

Lenore

Polly My QI has been shopping with me and sits quite in the cart. Loves to be told how cute he is. I've taken him in his dog bag and people have not known he was there. Yogi will more then likely be welcome.
