what goes with batik?

I'm thinking I'd enjoy playing with something different and have never wandered very far into the batik world. What do you think goes well with batik? Batiks have such life and motion that I'd guess they must be paired with a quiet contrast.

Repro's? naaah. Inappropriate. Fairy Frost? no. Probably too, too much. 'Reads as solid'? maybe. What do you think? Polly

Give a shot at google images for batik quilts and I bet you get some good visuals. I don't use a lot of batiks but tend to use them with anything that seems a bit more 'hip' or current. TAria

more batiks. buy a whole mess of 'em and play. some batiks have designs on them. others are just shades of one colour all over or various colours mushed together all over it. j.

Hand dyes or "printed" hand dyes. Mixing batiks together always works well too. Lots of batiks. mmmmmmmmmm

Sounds like a fun adventure. I'll get a pack of batik charms, dump the scrap bin and see what makes music. Come do a symphony with me. Arrive before dark. Polly

"J*" more batiks.

Nay, Kathyl. I was just hoping to nudge you into finishing that beauty. In the past two weeks, I've finished the Eagle, Purple Passion, Madness, 42 mice and a diagonal string pieced top. I'm exhausted but it is just Won-der-ful to have all of my UFOs finished. Might even be able to part with them. Polly

That's it. You're out of the club.

Polly, batiks play well with other batiks. But I really like to pair them with solids -- well, near solids. Black, red, yellow, cream ..... depends on the batik. I like your idea of the charm pack and dumping out your scrap basket. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I had this silly idea of emptying the scrap bin. Made 5 quilts in a row of simply scraps. The bin mushroomed. Lesson learned. But ! we would have such a good time auditioning batiks. How I wish we really could have a batik/scrap rootle party all together. I love to have you here with me in heart but wouldn't it be lovely to create and scramble in person? Polly

There is such an enormous variety 'out there', that, if you wanted to play, you probably wouldn't need anything else. They also vary in quality and texture etc.

If I were planning a batik party, I would go straight (via Google) to the range of Hoffman batiks. You could be sure, then, of quality at least.

I have very few, but those I have I treasure (and use sparingly!!, so that they last longer). I agree with others about using plains, tone on tone etc; but, as you are well aware, I am cautious >gI'm thinking I'd enjoy playing with something different and have never

I am fond of strong contrast and dramatic presentaion. So I frequently pair bright and jewel tone batiks with dark solids or ToTs, or dark batiks with lights. Sometimes batiks just sit up and say Behold me! I am a mood! Then they will be tucked in where I want the recipient to think of a rumbling sea, or trees in the spring, or whatever.

Remember back when I asked about everybody's favorite star patterns? What I ended up doing for the quilt I wanted to send, was a broken star with each large diamond pieced like a single log cabin block (start with a weeny diamond and add strips) from batiks. Purple in the middle shading to bright red on one side and bright blue on the other, matched like to like, and then used black for the setting pieces. The outter strips were ones where I used a fair bit of wax, so they were more, open I guess is the best word. Color density increased as you went towards the middle of each diamond. It came out rather well, it moves a lot but has nice safe solid places.

I did a batik plus Plaids-and-stripes (handwoven type) some years ago. It was actually the rctq BOTM. Came out well. (When quilting buddies come visit me, this is often their favorite quilt.) I think the reason it worked was that the colors of the hand-wovens are the same as the batik dyes, so they blended very well. Otherwise, just use "solid" hand-dyes with your patterned batiks.

Sounds lovely. I have used a diamond log cabin to good effect, but never (amazingly to me!) to make a diamond to be used with other diamonds in a single pattern (Le Moyne Star and such like come to mind). It's wonderful how ideas just come when you least expect them. Thanks ever so much for this one. I have a quilt in the relatively near future which is going to have to have diamonds in it. I will look at the log cabin possibility with it. Breadth is sometimes a good thing >gg<
