Sizes ?

Who knows what the 'proper' sizes should be for a king size quilt (UK) is that an American Queen?

It's all very confusing lol

According to MrMattress,co,uk a standard king mattress is 150x200 cm. (60x78 inches). An American queen size mattress is 72x75 inches. (183x190 cm) So there is a fair bit of difference in width, and a much smaller difference in length. Though I have yet to find two supposedly same size mattresses that are actually exactly the same size.

Quilt batts also vary in size a bit. Most brands run around 90x108 inches, though I have seen somewhat larger or smaller.

When making a gift quilt I tend to err on the side of caution and make it on the larger end of the range. Sometimes if a person is particularly tall I will extend the length, or if half of a couple complains that the other is a blanket hog I will extend the width. If I am so fortunate to have measurements I add two feet to the width and three to the length for overhang, pillows, and snuggability.

I find it hard to believe, but I think Nightmist is wrong. A standard American queen is 60 x 80 inches. Here's a chart with all the sizes: Some quilt patterns don't, in my opinion, allow for enough "drop" for the thicker mattresses that are so common now.

Hee hee, I just went and looked at the tag on the queen size upstairs before I answered that. Looked around online just now and most of the mattress places agree with you. I would have been smarter to drag out the one quilt book I've got that has a standard mattress sizing chart in it. I should have figured, the mattress on my bed is 75"x75" and claims to be a king. Yep buying sheets is a pain, one of the reasons I tend to make them.

Also I should have tucked the words "queen sized" onto the beginning of the sentence that starts with quilt batts.

Once again, the answer ( if not helpful) is "it depends". For that size bed we'd have to figure there may be one who is a hog about cover. If we're going to deal with 'decor' - do we need to at best cover the depth of the mattress? Some are 18" deep. I'm thinking to fix a size we need to know what/who will be beneath. Polly
