Check into your local college. You might find a course on starting a small business. Or are you looking for suppliers? Since you do a lot of sewing you should already know some brand names of fabrics...check on-line to see if they have web sites. They should be able to connect you with suppliers. I would think that once you have a couple of suppliers, the rest will follow suit.

"If you build it...they will come".

There are a couple of LQS stores in my area that are run from home. A bit of a drive, but everyone knows where they are and make it a point to get there. Remember...we are quilters...nothing can keep us from fabric, not even a shop off the beaten path.

I don't anymore. DH is in the Navy, so home is where the Department of Defense says it is. Currently it's Tacoma, Washington. We have LOTS of quilt shops up this way...LOL. We do drive through the BayArea on occasion, so if you open a shop, i'll be sure to stop in!

I always read the classified ads at the backs of quilting magazines. A year or so ago all of them had a book with a title that went something like "Starting Your Own Quilt Shop." Look through some of your back issues and see if they are still available. Also, the SBA (Small Business Administration? a federal agency) periodically gives seminars on starting your own small business, and I have read of service groups (Rotary?) that periodically offer volunteer help to new or startup businesses and their owners.

I second the motion for more VA LQS's. We hardly have any compared to the rest of you.

I've been thinking that Danville would be a perfect place for a quilt shop. It has a cutesy downtown & you wouldn't necessarily have to be on Hartz Avenue, because as we all know, Quilt Shops are a destination for quilters, not a walk-in experience. If I had any nerve, I'd open one in Danville myself, but I have zero retail experience & am too new to quilting to be able to help anyone! Good luck & put me on your mailing list if you move forward with it.

San Rafael has a nice one too. Pumpkin Seed Quilts. Has been there for 2 years now.
