Thanks to this group from a real novice

With a lot of helpful advice from members of this group I have now completed my first three quilt projects. My wife is an experienced quilter, but it seems to keep peace at home to get my advice from all of you patient people in this forum.

I now have the fabric to make some charity baby quilts and have been posting questions on this subject for a few days. It sounds like working with flannel and satin bindings may be a new tough challenge. Wish me luck.

Thanks from Jerry in North Alabama

Those tumbling blocks don't look like the work of a beginner. LOL Keep up the good work.

Let us in on the secret. . . what other type of work

Susan, I did kitchen & bath design and other cabinet work for a while, but I'm learning that quilting is far more exacting. I really enjoy the quilt design process (EQ6) and now understand why my wife buys so much fabric. I've started my own stash.

Wow, I am so jealous, I have been hanging around this bunch of great folks since August and I have yet to make my first quilt. I pieced a little doll quilt but I didn't quilt and no one has seen it either. I may practice my first quilting on it, haven't decided yet. Am still trying to get the time to sew the real thing and do a decent job, but it won't be anything like any of your's.

You are sure doing keepers for sure. Oh I have huge stash, just need to get the time to get to it.

Jerry they are wonderful! You don't choose 'easy', for a beginner, do you?! I sat and gazed at the second one for ages. It is stunning, and definitely one I wish I had made. I love it. Please tell me the blocks are appliquéd - if the whole thing is pieced I'm even more be-dazzled. . In message , MaleQuilter writes

Jerry, your work is gorgeous! If you like 3-D effects, google Victor Vasarely for ideas, or Karen Combs for quilts and books.

I have always been facinated by optical illusions. A few years ago I went with my wife to the quilt show in Paducah and saw some really interesting tumbling block quilts. At the time, I was in the cabinet business and at the show I really studied the quilting frame displays. When we got home I built my wife a three roll quilting frame and began to get interested in quilting.

This past summer I went with my wife to the quilt show in Nashville and this time I got carried away with the sewing machines with embroidery modules. My wife already had a Bernina 150 but I wanted one of new machines with the computer aided embroidery systems. So when we got home we bought a Bernina 640, embroidery module, and Editor Plus software. Since this was mostly my idea, I just had to get into quilting to justify the expense.

I found the Karen Combs web site, bought her books and DVD and jumped right in. My first project was a single block just to see how putting all those diamonds together would work. Then I decided to make lots of blocks of different size and put them on one quilt. After sewing all of the individual block units, I spent several days on my wife's design wall moving the blocks around until I was happy with the overall design. I then machine appliqued all of the blocks onto a dark background and then machine quilted the project.

My wife does most of her quilting work by hand, she was not very encouraging when I wanted to machine applique all those small pieces and was even less encouraging when I wanted to apply the binding by machine. That is why all the help and advice from this discussion forum was so important and I really appreciate it.
