wedding gift ideas please

One of my former Sunday School students is getting married: he's a pastor, so I had thought I'd make the Shepherd's Light quilt for them for a wedding gift. I don't know her at all, so I'm guessing from their Sears gift registry what their colours would be.

Here's the quilt pattern

I'm thinking I'll do it in the more country version, minus the red and with a beige background instead of the dark blue...maybe throw a little brown in somewhere. [Colours according to registry are mushroom, loden, khaki, "desert sand", dusty blue] Here are the question[s]: Should I make it the same size [about 62" square with the borders], or should I add [or insert] a pieced border to make it a little bigger? Make duplicates of the other blocks and "float" them a bit more? Or I could make

9 Shepherd's Light blocks and border with the others...Shepherd's Light is 17" square, so it would give me a centre that's 60" square {about the right size for a queen size, with the 12" blocks as the drops-- I'd have to make a total of 24 border blocks ---yikes!} That's maybe more work than I wanna do when it's iffy whether it will go with their decor.

Comments and suggestions are welcome..did I mention the wedding is in 8 weeks?

Oh my goodness, Kim, what a beautiful, beautiful quilt. Your choice of pattern and colors sounds just perfect. I think I'd stay with the 'as pictured' size. That way, the bride can use it however she chooses. A queen-size with your time limits and not knowing her? Naaaaah. A 62" square - she can top a bed, hang it from the staircase, tastefully drape it on the sofa - no limit to where she can enjoy your creation. Stay conservative with your fabrics. This doesn't sound like a wild and crazy girl. Polly

Kim, have you seen Footprints at The Spider's Web? Might give you an idea of desert sand and you might want to use it. I backed a graduation quilt with it and it is well-loved. Polly

Kim, that's going to be a gorgeous quilt. I'd probably go with the 62" square. I had to make a similar decision last year when making a quilt for my nephew's wedding. I knew he would appreciate what went into the gift, but I wasn't so sure about his wife. I stayed with neutral colors, which I knew would work okay in their home, but since I didn't know what her reaction would be, I just kept my nephew in mind - I kept it in a size (I think it's about 66" square) that would work for him to pull it out of the closet or wherever and throw it over his legs on the couch while he was watching TV. And now, if I ever get it done, we'll see if that works! They just celebrated their first anniversary, so I really do need to get it finished!

Oh, and I agree with Polly - the Footprints fabric would be really great for the colors they've listed. It would work very nicely as a backing for this particular quilt. Might even work in the top -- I'd take a look at using it for the background, but then I'd probably use tone-on-tones or solids for the rest of it if I did that. Just a thought.

Hi Kim,

You've chosen a gorgeous and interesting pattern. I agree with the others. Given your time constraints and the fact that you're not 100% sure about the decor, I'd stay with something "throw size". If it were me, I'd probably stretch it a bit somehow, to make it an obvious throw. My reasoning is this: much to my shock, I've found some people don't like to hang quilty things on their walls! Hard to believe I know. However, everyone likes to snuggle under a quilt. :-)

I'll be eager to see what you do with it. Oh, and I agree--explain the symbolism of the blocks to them in the card, so they can appreciate the deeper meaning.

Best regards, Michelle in NV

No suggestions, just admiration. You've chosen a gorgeous pattern with deep meaning and the color scheme you described will result in an elegant quilt. Wish I was the bride! I think the original size is perfect. I predict this quilt will end up on the pastor's office wall where it will inspire both the minister and all the folks who enter that office for pastoral care.

Wow, Kim, what a beautiful gift that will be!

I like the 62" size for snuggling. If you make it too big, they'll think it's for the bed and, unless it's exactly what they were planning for their bedroom, it might get tucked away in a closet. But then, I just love snuggle quilts! Your colors sound lovely.
