If Recipient of Quilt Changes--?

Started a scrap quilt (here's the pattern:

thank you, Quiltville!) for a woman I don't know very well but who clearly needed a hug quilt. I also needed to make a simple scrappy quilt. As time goes on I realize I just don't know her well enough to give her a quilt, or to finish it for her--they are, after all, a bit of work ;-)--she's not a friend, or even a close acquaintance. The WIP is in green because that's her favorite color (I asked her. She doesn't know I'm a quilter.) I have about half the blocks done, maybe fewer, for a generous lap-size. Someone I very much want to make a quilt for is into frogs. I always figured I'd make her a frog cabin ;-) but I'm thinking I could throw in some small frog prints and make more blocks with blue, her favorite color. But it might be weird, since the completed blocks definitely have a dose of scrappy greens. She's one of those friends for whom I want to make a really decent quilt.

Should this become a UFO? How have y'all handled such things?

I can see dark blue frogs hopping along the bottom of that quilt. How about a little applique?

Green is ok too, because that is the color of frogs.

Since you used a lot of greens they should go well with a frog theme for your friend's quilt, although I probably wouldn't put them with log cabin blocks. The blocks could be used as a scrappy border around a large applique or paper pieced frog medallion. There is a quilt block called Leap Frog that might look nice combined with the scrappy blocks. Or you could simply make a scrappy baby quilt out of them and do the quilt you plan for your friend. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Is the smaller, solid color square in your green blocks also green or is it some other color? If it's white or alight shade of beige, I would make up a bunch of blocks in blues and that same solid color. Even if the solid is a green, see if it would go with an assortment of blues in your stash. Then alternate the blue blocks and the green blocks, add a border of an appropriate frog print (which will have a *lot* of green in it!) and you have a very nice quilt you can call "Leap Frog". Tell your friend that the alternating blocks of green and blue represent green frogs leaping across blue water. Heck, you could even add a random block of scrappy floral prints between the green and the blue and say that's a lily pad the frog is jumping on :-). If you end up with leftover blocks, put them in your stash for use in future HUG {{{Quilts}}}. Not sure what size your blocks are, but if they are 6.5" unfinished they are perfect for most HUGS. If they are bigger, keep them anyway -- lots of folks are now asking for 6.5" OR

12.5" unfinished. You could always add a border to an 8.5" or 10.5" unfinished block to make it the appropriate size :-)! Whatever you decide to do, keep us posted. Be sure to take a photo and post it somewhere for us to see, OK? CiaoMeow >^;;^^;;^< (RCTQ Queen of Kitties) Angels can't show their wings on earth but nothing was ever said about their whiskers! Howdy!

Who would know the difference? Did you tell the first woman you were making a green quilt for her? Is it of lesser quality than a quilt you'd make for a friend (I don't see why it would be)? If you don't tell 1st woman about the quilt, if you don't tell the

2nd person that the quilt was started for someone else, who will know? Besides 400 RCTQers and the millions who might check into this newsgroup? Maybe we'll tell. What's it worth to ya' for us to keep it secret? ;-D

All right--that's right up there with award-winning SNEAKY begging!! Most impressive, Ragmop! Alas, it is not worth parting with millions, or even several hundred, FQ's to keep the secret. But it was a terrific try!

BTW, thanks to your responses, I've decided to add blue to the mix, throw in as solid squares the deep royal blue with wizardy frogs that I've been hoarding, and turn this WIP into my frog friend's quilt. Every time I push the envelope the resulting quilt is invariably better, and y'all inspire me to take that risk. Thanks. And, taking risks is connected, for me, to the acronym for frog that's the reason my friend is into them: Fully Rely On God.
