YBR quilting suggestions needed

Hi all,

I'm hoping the many folks who have done Yellow Brick Road quilts will have some suggestions for quilting designs. I'm making this for a friend's baby shower on Sunday 20 July. (!!) Fortunately my current writing contract has been slightly delayed, so I should have a couple of almost-full days to devote to finishing this. The top can be found here:

Any ideas will be much appreciated!

Or puffy clouds, or maybe smiling crescent moons (or all of them!)

LC, you are FAST! I was thinking about stars, but am unsure as to what to do with them. A star in each block (lots of ends to bury)? Some kind of continuous star pattern?

Thanks for responding!

Hmm, I like the idea of moons.

Thanks, Ronnie. You've got me thinking.

Stars would be great. I found that it isn't to hard to free-form sew a star and then run a "tail" to the next place and make another one. Then it is continuous stitching, fewer ends to deal with! Good luck. Mary

Hi gail:

I would do a meander/stipple stitch with varigated thread. But, try to get one without a dark component or parts of the meander will disappear on your dark fabric.

Or, if you are good at it, why not try meandering stars since one of your prominent fabrics has stars on it (actually on closer inspection, it looks like most of the fabrics have stars on them).

I have quilted a couple of YBRs with meandering in variegated threads and was pleased with the results. I did another one in a diagonal crosshatch, again with variegated thread, and did not like the result as well as the meandering. The lines of a YBR are all so straight up & down, side to side, that I think it needs some curves in the quilting to soften the look a little.

That's how I quilted two of my YBR's - meandering. One with variegated thread, the other just one color that complemented the quilt. Stitch in the ditch for the third one. I liked the meandering much better.

Gail: Here's a quick and easy one that I've used on Stack and Slash. First grid quilt the blocks. Then switch to free motion quilting; just doodle lines up & down or left and right. Do a up and down in first block, ending in the up area near block #2; do left and right in #2, ending in the bottom near #3; do up and down , etc. You work the row from left to right. At the end of the row make sure you end near lower corner at the border, so you can move directly to the block just beneath. Work your way back to the left. Here is a 'sketch.'

Clear as mud? It is much easier to do than to describe! There is no pattern, so there are no errors! PAT >

They will show you how to get off the lists, with a very little letter-writing.
